I have decided to start this poll, because I have seen many XPS 15 (L521X) owners to decide to the return of the machine.
I have also wanted to involve the non-owners so that they can post the reason of their renunciation.

You're missing a "On the fence, waiting to see if Dell fixes problems" option.

You have totally reason, I'm a little in embarrassment to require this modification to the moderation (it's already the second time :D).
I have understand that Throttling and WiFi choices should be unified (seems to be always chosen together).
    I try to require...

Why? This is a poll, if there are more happy users than not happy users the result will note it.
But maybe an option "I will become owner" is needed...

Don't like this poll? Don't read this thread then... If you're an happy owner, then choose that option and maybe tell us what makes you happy even though the presence of other issues. It could help someone to decide about buying the laptop

I've been undecided between the XPS 15 and the Inspiron 17R SE since it came out. I know they're quite different, the XPS is a nice size and looks amazing, but the Inspiron is a beast for the price. It's way more powerful. Way bigger too, but I'm a big guy so hopefully I can manage that. And I'm less likely to have overheating problems in 2 years...or 2 days as the case is seeming to be with the XPS

I thought build quality was something that the XPS would win on. It might have better materials sure, but it seems to have been put together and tested by trained rabbits. I was very much leaning towards the XPS for a long time, but I think it has lost me now. I just can't trust the XPS not to keep having problems down the line. It has another three weeks to win me back and if it doesn't show huge improvement I'm going with the Inspiron.
I'm not trying to be negative, I was really excited to see the XPS when it came out but these last few weeks have made me very wary about it.

I just got an update from UPS, XPS 15 L521x arrives in three days time as XPS 1647 replacement.
Worried a bit seeing so many unhappy users. I will see, if not happy with it when comes to collect the XPS 16, I will give XPS 15 L521x instead :)

Question: curious observation, but it appears that the posters from Italy are the most obsessed with this notebook. And by obsessed, I mean seem to have a need to obsess over their NOT buying this notebook. Obsess over its flaws even though they have no intention of buying it. Normally, once someone decides not to buy a notebook, they simply move on and find another.

I find it curious because it's a very rare thing on this forum - to spend so much time and effort on something you don't own nor seemingly intend to buy. I wonder if some of our Italian posters could shed some light on why they have an obsessive need to go on and on about this notebook yet are not owners nor seem to intend to be owners. Why does it matter so much to you?

BTW, I helped the OP modify the poll to its current state. So for those of you who had reported this thread in hopes that something might be done about it, I apologize but I'm really fascinated by the need for someone to make it that I'd like to see where it goes.

Personally, I keep hoping they can fix throttling and wifi, because in that case I will definitely buy the laptop: I still consider it a good piece of tech

EDIT: never considered an MBP, really don't like Apple :D

So I am not the only one that found it odd the posters from Italy seem to be obsessed with this notebook and its issues.
Not sure why that is. Do they all hate Dell or just this notebook? Maybe they should just go get their rMBP and give up on this Dell computer.

It may be because unlike other parts of the EU, Italy tends to get subpar and limited configurations of notebooks from manufacturers with this Dell XPS being the first time Dell offers something substantial in Italy. So their disappointment with its issues is more keenly felt. Just a guess. But it is fascinating nonetheless.

Well, by checking the poll results it doesn't look like it's something related to a specific country.
I think it's not unfair to be mad at Dell... they could have built the ultimate windows laptop with the perfect mix of design, performance and customer service, but so far they didn't deliver.

I'm really not pretending a level of performance that is close to a gaming laptop, but given its price I guess that everybody is expecting a fully working WiFi and some solid FPS (Diablo III is now stuttering after flashing the latest beta BIOS, and I really can't define this title as the bleeding edge of technology)

Although most people here would define it as whining, personally I think it's good for customers to put some pressure on a company because they feel disappointed with the quality of their laptop: Dell may lose some money now but hopefully we'll all have some gains in the future where, maybe, they'll try not to make the same mistakes again, and personally I can't wait to show some of the iFanboys I know any Windows based configuration can best the wonderful macintosh.

It's not the poll results, it's the reports of trolling. The Italian posters generate the most trolling reports from other posters due to their incessant obsessive need to post about the flaws of the notebook all the while not owning it. That's strikes any objective observer as quite a strange coincidence. And it's quite a rare thing on the forum in general.

It's plenty fine to "pressure" a manufacturer to fix issues. There's plenty of that going on in the owners thread with interactive feedback from the Dell reps there.

So you really have to wonder why the obsessiveness.

I can speak only for myself, but I guess who is really obsessed from this notebook is who sends troll reports for every post that does not appreciate it...
I hope that there are not racial motives on the fact that the reports are concentrated on the Italians...

Why am I still here? Because the alternatives that I have selected are not still available in my market:
Envy 17 3290el (presented, but not available)
Gigabyte P2542G (presented, but available only in Germany)
Precision M4700 (presented and available, but out of budget. To notice that 512SSD version of M4700 has lower price and better specs of 512SSD version of L521X, but unfortunately, I can't consider this version).
Yes, I know these notebooks have different target respect L521X, but others alternatives don't satisfy my requests.
So, I must to wait, and at this point is better to wait until Windows 8 is released (not because I like Windows 8 )
Therefore, if DELL decides to L521x hardware revision that solves its problems, I could still consider it as possible purchase.

Many users are here from March to speak about this machine, I am one of them.
When the thread "new XPS15 L521X" is started, I guess there were only potential customers strongly interested to buy this machine.
Now, I think many users are interested to know the end of story, maybe this is an collateral effect of the hype that was created in that thread.

Let's try to shed some light here:
    1) I am not from Italy but lived there quite long, so maybe I can comment on your question - I think it is mostly language barrier (English) and culture: to discuss things loudly, use some "bad language and "complain" (=make your voice be heard, a must in I). Think about stereotypes and as unfair they are there is some truth in them. Scusate raggazzi, ho dovuto dirlo. And it is all perception; we are hardly objective outside our context.

EDIT: Got to add that what one sees frome outside I sometimes wonder which posts are reported and which not. Which brings me to the cultural perception conclusion.

Concerning the buzz around the L521x:
    2) I am also following the L521x thing here since pre-launch and sometimes marvel why I spend so much time reading the forum here. I wonder if there is some obsessive touch to it, but I have sunk costs time wise following it (a good justification ?).

+ but/and: I need a new laptop sooner or later, so I have to look around anyway.
    a) Number one reason being “tight” to Dell is customer next day home service. My NB = number one working instrument.

    b) Why the XPS line? It matches a certain user profile (including me) and offers features you do not find in the other lines. Then Dell is not as configurable in EU as in USA in general. It is mean but always has been like that.

Bill created a lot of expectations so I waited instead of buying a L502 (know them, have them as well as Latitude and Vostro). Disappointed? Yes and know – but hey it is computer world. It moves on.

Why then not buying it immediately or another machine? Concerning this laptop
    c) I have the feeling that it is still unclear what kind of product it is, thinking that more people are in the same boat here. I am still interested in the L521x (reasons see above a+b+c) and I know a coupon will come like always (10% weekend discount has already been seen) and given the issues are solved I most likely will buy it.

In my point of view it is all a question of reference point and I am obviously having mine. Thus one thing is to know the technical issues and hopefully the fix to it. Another thing is to understand the degree of problem and its “variance” to user profiles. It is all perception and context.

That’s why I still follow (being obsessed?), do appreciate critical questions and sometimes the clash as well as the poll here. Oh no, I even “waste” time posting bc found your question sociologically interesting. Will turn useful for the next product launch consulting … at least I hope.

I am in the US, am a working professional, and do not own a single Apple product.

I can tell you that the L521X discussions are interesting because it's a textbook example of a truly promising product from a large company with a long industry history that frankly was released in a broken state.

Having owned several Dell computers from my company, I've had a terrible experience with the hardware. So when I found that the new XPS 15 had everything I was looking for (i7, capable GPU, 1080p with no orange issues, mSATA, etc.) in a slim package, it suddenly answered the question of why can't a PC manufacturer release a decent computer with all of the bells and whistles when Apple has home runs every year?

We're not even talking price here, which from Apple's success, people are willing to pay plenty of money for a premium product with a good support backing.

So then the throttling issues came up, and the reviews of the well known review websites (Anandtech, Notebookcheck) was in direct alignment with the owners of the forums--

The new premium XPS 15 is a broken product. The PC fans were all rooting for the underdog to go up against the new Apple line up and it's really just a huge disappointment. And that's not even including the Wifi issue.

So maybe we're all taking it personally. We're passionate geeks and we love our hardware, and want nothing but the best. I dont know about our Italian counterparts, but I'd be even more disappointed if I had even less options.

Likewise, if the new Macbook Retina was a broken product, you can sure bet we'd all be on top of it.

i agree to an extent. But you make the assumption that Apple releases flawless products year after year. The MBP runs hot (has been for some time now), i just sold mine and i could almost fry an egg on it. The cooling system was not designed properly .

There are also lots of reports of issues with the retina model. My friends display has serious ghosting for example.

The best part about Apple is their retail stores. You don't hear too many complaints on forums because most people just walk in to a store and get it fixed or get a replacement.

That's a good point and I'll admit that I probably give Apple a little too much credit because I don't have experience with their products and just read the gushing reviews from tech websites. Any techie will get excited when a manufacturer shoves more power into a smaller, more mobile package because historically that's how computer tech evolves.

That aside, I think it's been discussed that a slim computer than can handle CPU/GPU intensive tasks (read: gaming) without heat issues still doesn't exist without compromises yet.

On a positive note, if Dell somehow decides to re-release the XPS 15 with a redesigned cooling system and devoid of any other major issues, I will gladly show my support with my wallet. The same goes with the other PC makers and their systems.

Here's the reason... We want to buy it, as it is on paper... Unfortunately, it doesn't work as advertised at the moment. However, knowing Dell, we're still hopeful for a fix.

And why we don't just go buy another one? We don't see any other alternative! Dell really made a "one of a kind" product, with no real alternative in our eyes!

So I guess it might look a little obssessive, but that's understandable, for such a great and unique product, which still might turn out great if Dell fixes the issues!

    you found the right words
+ a interesting study what social media guys (Bill) showing real customer commitment can do good. I learn a lot from that.

let me add: A lot of people here throughout the L521x threads assume that it is Dell vs. Apple issue trying to corner you there or arguing in this comparison.
I think there are a lot of people for whom Apple is no option - not only price wise, but e.g. for software. One more reason to follow the XPS (or any product in the Win world that is in the same segment) and an explanation of the interest.

Sorry, but perhaps I am a little strange, but I find very curious that someone joins to forum in order to post this only one post...
I can't go on MBP or rMBP, because I need a windows machine and I think that Apple makes overpriced machines.

No big differences between Italy and others EU country in PC market, but in this moment the notebook producers that offer a notebook configurator in my market are Sony, Santech (Clevo barebone) and Dell (only for some notebook as Precision or Alienware, but looks the same in USA, certainly not all options present in the US market are present in my market)
HP sells preconfigurate notebooks, usually with midhigh configuration, but Envy 15 is an exclusive for US market as notebook configurator.
Lenovo is focused in business sector.
Acer and Asus sell preconfigurate machine and Acer does not have good reputation...
The problems with L521X are known, lack of customization is a minor issue compared with Throttling & poor WiFi and I guess no one can be stopped from this lack.

Very interesting responses. I ask because it is uncanny and I'd like to figure out exactly what the impetus is. Jury is still out of course as I don't expect the answer(s) to be a simple. I don't even think those that exhibit such behavior are fully cognizant of it or see how disruptive it can be in the forum.

Ultimately, this thread just drills down what anyone can glean from reading the owners lounge. It presents nothing new, nor anything particularly necessary other than it being a summation of opinion. So you don't have to worry about it being closed any time soon. Though, as stated before, there is a near zero-tolerance policy in the owners lounge. Any reports from owners about disruptive non-owners will be met without amnesty as there have been plenty of warnings already.

I think it's simple for most. We had huge expectations. I followed this thread for months and it was very exciting, almost like reading a suspense novel/watching a movie. When the pics started leaking, it became even more exciting. The laptop is absolutely beautiful. Then the price was dropped like a bomb and became a huge disappointment (for me). Now that I've been reading about the problems, I'm glad it was originally so expensive and I didn't buy it because if it had been a more reasonable price, I would have jumped on it and would have regretted it.

People feel cheated because of the high expectations and the very high price they paid for such a flawed machine.

When I bought the 15z I felt I knew what to expect of another MacBook Pro clone from Dell. Still I wanted to believe that the latest XPS 15 model would at least have a better display than the previous one. I do feel guilty from taking pleasure in watching others who had it worse than I did. It makes me feel that I'm getting more than my money's worth with my L502x, although not enough to offset my total loss from the money and (money value of) time I spent on dealing with two defective Dell XPS laptops for almost three months now and counting. The quality of recent Dell XPS systems aside, I've started to appreciate Dell's customer service and tech support. I guess it's just a matter of a lot of getting used to. Or earning the level of patience one learns after a lot of giving up. I just realized, hey, they're actually eager to do something about it and I really appreciate that.

For me the huge disappointment came much earlier with the release of Ivy Bridge. I was waiting for it for so long too; I even resisted ridiculous deals for Sandy Bridge systems. Now I'm only waiting for the Asus UX21A. I just want the cheapest possible PC with a 1080p screen that rivals the most expensive in the market.

I find it funny that the majority of responses are from people who have either returned the system or have given up on it......................yet these same people are still following this forum! I haven't purchased the XPS 15 yet, and, if the issues aren't addressed soon, I won't. But there's still a possibility that I'll buy the laptop. If I had given up completely, I'd like to think I would have moved on by now. Having said that, I don't want the people who have given up to think I'm making fun of them. The "trolling" doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I hope they keep complaining. I want the Dell representatives who browse this forum to see that there are a lot of unhappy XPS 15 customers and would-be customers out there because I think that awareness will increase the likelihood of Dell fixing the problems ASAP.

Well, in my case my biggest dissapoinment and the reason of some "rage" (I try to write peacefuly XD) it's because I let scape a 35% coupon for the l502x because I wanted to wait for the new Ivy Bridge and GT640m and (I had big expectaitons for this laptop from Bill's posts on the previous thread which were killed once the laptop was released) , so with that coupon the laptop could cost me around US$1000 with the higest configuration back then and shipping and taxes included, but this may be my fault not Dell's.

Second, the xps15 was the best option available in my contry, I'm from Costa Rica and there's no many laptop options for us, there's only, toshiba, HP, Dell, Sony and I've seen some Asus, but all this laptops come with low performance parts and very high prices, there's a popular adage here that the price in colones (our currency) from dolar price you just add three zeros (+000) to the dolar price. It's not always true but dealers here raise the prices a lot.

Third, unlike countries like US, or european countries, the only Dell laptops available here are the Inspiron 14 and 15, there is no 15 or 17 SE, the XPS's and latitude ,vostros. Some people, even Bill advised me that I may go for Alienware, but those models aren't available either, so the XPS15 was my final option.

So that are some reasons why, at last in my case, I'm dissapointed with Dell. I'm not writing this post with a "trolling" porpouse but trying to asnwer the 2.0 question.

Finally, why I'm still here in this forum? I'm here because I still want to read news about this laptop and see if this problems are fixed, the price comes lower and maybe next year I'll buy it but I may use my money for a new desktop instead of this if these problems are not solved.

    Peace =)

I think it's already been said, but for me the L521x is the ideal laptop if it worked as advertised. I've put my purchase on hold for now, but I'll need a new laptop by Christmas so I'm hoping the issues might be resolved by then. If they are, I'll most likely buy one.

Seems that this thread has served its purpose for the most part. A number of you who answered the question I posed perhaps didn't realize that the question wasn't targeted at them. But their answer is appreciated nonetheless. Additionally, poll participation has slowed to a crawl and wouldn't materially change if left open for a few weeks. That's the nature of percentages, statistics, and curiosity of a new, mostly purposeless thread wearing off.

So unless someone can make a compelling argument for this thread to remain open other than as a place for non-owners to possibly call home or that Dell could use it to gauge level of discontent and do something about it*, it'll likely be closed in a few days.

*Dell wouldn't use it as forum polls are notoriously biased considering forum constituency and are woefully unscientific.

I'm surprised so many people gave up because of the display.

Sigh, really needed a computer for school but guess I'll have to stick with using my CR-48 for now.
Can't really buy outside of the Dell hemisphere now cause I asked for over a grand in Dell GCs. Here's to hoping for the next iteration to be kick butt awesome.

To be completely honest, I don't get Dell at all.
Dell has been a company making computers for years..I find it illogical that my M1530 works about 90% better than what I've heard about the L521X. Mind you this computer doesn't even have an I processor. In short, they should feel ashamed. How'd this even pass any tests?
I was going to buy a 15z but then the XPS 13 came out and I fell in love with it's aesthetics, and I would play with it at work all the time. Now the major kick back for me on that computer was not only the screen size but the resolution and space. Being an ultrabook it doesn't fit my needs.
I hear they're coming out with it's big brothers and boy was I searching it up nearly every day or so. The computer looked so beautiful the specs sounded amazing. Hear I was thinking finally...a computer that can stand up to Apple. A PC computer comparable to a Mac computer, thank god.

I work for Best Buy being zoned in the apple section, I get the "PC SUCKS. MAC FTW. MACS ARE AMAZING."
Playing and demoing the computers, I realize even though I can't get comfortable, and even if the Macs aren't perfect. They're somewhat superior to most PC computers in terms of battery life and basic use. Overcoming customer objections when it comes to extended warranty was tough because Apple buyers have so much faith in their company. You won't see Apple trying to stall you and then doom you of your return policy, or have to deal with ignorant customer service. I mean the wi-fi issue has been reported but if you talk to a sales rep they're just like what? Wi-fi issue? Pfft it's just you man. -__-
Now when it comes to PC computers most people get all of best buy's services because they don't trust the company. They buy a computer knowing it's going to fail sooner or later and that's sad.

Back to the L521X, I just ordered it through Best Buy. I'm not going to put up with Dell's excuses and "fixes" for something that won't work. I can return the computer within 30 days and that's how many days Dell as a company have to keep me as a loyal customer. If it's just the Wi-Fi issue I can take it. My internet is awful anyway. But anything else than that I won't.
I want to put a Honest review of the computer when I get and play with it for those that don't have the computer and are being lied to by video reviews like CNET and stuff. >.>
It's aggravating how a computer this expensive and great in terms of aesthetics, fails to do the simplest job. With Bill out the picture, I'm 3 times more worried about getting it and already thinking of returning.

So I will wait and hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones.

FWIW, I voted 'fence' but the machine would have to manifest a different issue for me to return it, wifi being the only one I have suffered from.

I don't have any issues with extended time flogging the CPU (transcoding video using all threads, 4x cores at 2.9 Ghz the whole time); while doing other tasks (net and disk related) on a separate virtual desktop (using dexpot 4-sided cube).

I however do not represent someone who is flogging the GPU, or GPU+CPU, that's a completely different picture to be sure. I'm betting if I was that I'd be using ThrottleStop to set up the machine for best tolerance, but it's very possible that if I was a dedicated gamer that I'd have to return the system. But I'm not.

The WiFi performance is disappointing; and I am thinking of changing to a 3x3 card and adding a 3rd antenna myself to see if I can improve the situation - however my normal use environment at home doesn't exceed the performance capability of the system as my internet service is only 3 Mbit anyway and I do not seem to have a problem getting stable (if slow) connections when I am at other locations. Lucky I guess. For times when I *need* a faster WiFi I have the Dongle that Lorna got sent to me.

The only display related issue that I have is the glossy finish, but that's hard to avoid these days.

I give the machine an 8.5 out of 10, as is, for my use.

My only other option would have been some sort of Precision Workstation as I just don't trust the build quality of the Inspiron line (I am a long-term buyer - my old machine is going-on 6 yrs old). Current Lattitude machines don't offer 1920x1080, and the Precision would have cost ~500 more which was outside the budget (sub $2K, delivered, being the budget).

People who returned or gave up the XPS 15 are considering which other option for the same price range ?

I'd had my mind set on one of these to take back to uni with me in a couple of weeks. They're a fair bit more expensive than the competition, but on paper it had everything I wanted. It's also a very good looking (and thin!) laptop. All good up to here, even given the inflated price.

Reading some reviews however changed it all. The throttling was just unacceptable, and the A06 BIOS appears to have made things worse rather than better!? Ideally I'd expect a laptop to be able to run at 100% CPU (Prime95 etc) and 100% GPU (furmark etc) without throttling. However that's uncommon on most laptops with decent components in a small shell. What isn't acceptable though, is to have a laptop throttle as regularly and severely as the XPS L521X does when playing basic games! After reading about that I then stumbled across the poor Wi-Fi issue; I do a lot of downloading and streaming, so that's a big issue for me. How a product like this can make it through development and testing with 2 MAJOR flaws such as these is beyond me. So for those two reasons (especially so when the laptop is at least £200 more than anything comparable) I looked elsewhere.

Eventually I ordered a Samsung Series 7 Chronos (NP700Z5C), which appears to have near enough the same specification as the dell in nearly all areas. It's only lacking in screen (900p against 1080p), and a smaller flash cache rather than the 32GB mSATA on the dell. The main bonus is that the Samsung will cost me £800, whereas the closest Dell specification would be just under £1,300 (a bit less if I get lucky with vouchers). That's a £500 difference for a small difference in specification!

Why anybody would buy the Dell now when you consider the competition it has is crazy. It's sadly a flawed product that's a few hundred pounds too expensive.

You're lucky, it took me two systems and a lot of annoyance to find that out.

I'm on the returns list. I'm currently considering the ASUS U500, Lenovo Y500, Retina Macbook Pro and HP Envy 15. Half of those aren't available yet but I need some time to research this after being burned with the XPS.

Lucky and glad I did some reading first! The U500 looks perfect for what I want, but I need the laptop by next weekend, so can't afford to wait for it to be released. Same deal for the Envy 15. I must admit I was tempted by getting a MBP and just running it as a Windows device, but reviews turned me away from that idea, and I don't get on well enough with OSX to use it normally.

Very nearly bought the Y580 as well, but the Samsung has near enough the same performance all round, is a lot thinner, and £200 cheaper! I'd say it's worth taking a look at if you're still hunting around.

That's a reasonable notebook, funny that's less than the Lenovo in the UK as it's about $200 more than the Lenovo here (in Canada).

I have time to look, my old notebook does function it's just very slow and the screen is messed up.

There's a higher model with 1080p and other improved internals. You're looking at the lower model to the one I was referring to.

They will try to fix throttling and wifi, maybe also the optical drive noise, but I'm very doubtful that they will change screen model

Hi - I just bought an xps L521x for my mum (56 y/o). It has 8gb ram, i7 3632qm and the 640m nvidia 2gb graphics. She want's to play game, but, her games are not like the games you think. She loves the look of the laptop and the screen, do you think it will be ok for her? the most demanding game she will want to play will be sim city 4 i think. Any help would be much appriciated, as i have already bought it and it arrives soon, but i can return it for a refund if needed. I was thinking about buying her an E6530 with the same specs, as that's a thicker laptop I'm guessing the cooling will be better? But it only has the NVS 5200m graphics, but should be fine for her. What do you think i should do?

    Thanks
    Rob

Rob, I think those more casual games are probably fine. Probably.

WiFi performance and reliability could still be a problem for her though.
