I've got one of each and both is broken - the 501 has a bad mobo and the 502 has a bad screen. Can I pull the 502 motherboard and keyboard and put it in the LX501 without any problems? Just want to knwo if anybody has done it before I waste my time trying to pull everything out.

I think they should be similar enough such that you can just remove the display assembly from one and plop it on the other. As I always say... try it!

You would be best putting the l501x screen onto the l502x, since the motherboards (and keyboards?) aren't compatible.

Additionally, I would assume the l502x has a better CPU & GPU.

motherboards aren't compatible ie it won't fit in the chassis? the LX502 is pretty much incapable of HAVING a screen - my 3 year old decided to do ballet on it and now the screen is cracked and the hinges are busted. Like literally have two halves of a similar computer without a warranty for either.

Are you sure the screen is irreplacable?

As you can see on this foto the hinges are replaced together with the screen, only if the sockets where the grey "anchors" go in the XPS chassis are damaged/broken is it a lost cause.

yeah, the chassis on the 502 is deadlined - the motherboard is fine. the 501s motherboard is deadlined, the screen is fine.

found out i still have a warranty on the 501, decided not to try to frankenstein it after reading matrix's post. sent them an email after dealing with tech support, i've had the HD and motherboard replaced multiple times and I've decided to pull out the big guns and demand they replace it in compliance with CA's consumer protection lemon laws (3+ repairs, replacement item).

Talked to the escalation team who offered to replace the LX501 with a refurbed LX502.

    Had a 740qm, replacing with a 2760QM
435m is going to be replaced with a 540M
640gb HD is replaced with a 1TB Hdd
    improved wireless card, too.

as long as this one doesn't fall apart (my LX502 was pretty good until my kid got a hold of it) I should be happy. the remainder of my warranty until december is going to be honored, too.
