I have two M1330s. One has 2GB of Hynix RAM (2x1GB) and the other 4GB of Nanya RAM (2x2GB).
I am thinking of making both machines 3GB - I think the extra RAM will outweigh the performance hit of partly losing dual channel access.
Are there likely to be problems?
The respective labels read:

There will be no problems.

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
There won't be any problems. The bandwidth penalty from asymmetric dual-channel won't be significant.

Thanks a bunch guys for the fast response!

FYI on the ex-4GB machine the memory score in the Windows Experience test dropped from 5.0 to 4.9 which is not very serious.
On the machine which was upgraded from 2 to 3GB: the memory score stayed on 4.8
Two other scores decreased, but it probably isn't significant (sometimes the score changes by .1 from run to run anyway - and of course Windows Experience is not much of a benchmark)
Graphics 4.1 -> 4.0
Gaming graphics 4.8 -> 4.7
We'll see what my son's verdict is - he had pronounced the machine very slow but I cleaned the fan, defragged C, updated the Intel WiFi driver.... and then finally discovered that the power options had been changed from High Performance to Power Saver.... undoing that alone should be enough to make him happy. -

Update the graphics driver also, it will help a lot.
And keep the 8400m cool, preferably under 60C. The G86 core has a known fault. The solder cracks after a while. Keeping the GPU under 60 will stop it from failing. Also you should extend your warranty. -
Thanks - I am using latest stock graphics driver from either Windows Update or Dell for the original 'gaming' machine which has the 8400M GPU. I don't have a lot of time to mess around with it and am not sure how much there is to lose or gain by doing so.
I know all about the heat issue - that machine was one of the first to be delivered. Had two motherboard replacements so far and the warranty is more than 1 year expired now. One reason not to renew it is it is only honoured in Asia and I moved to Africa and now US - I can't guarantee to be visiting China again whenever it fails. The good news is that it is over a year now with no failure (or bad news - depending on whether you are an optimist or pessimist).
As a result of the 8400 issues the newer machine (from the outlet) has Intel graphics (and a SSD and fast cpu).
I think GPU temperatures often up to 100 deg or so. 60deg is a dream.
How safe to mix memory from two M1330s?
