How to install Windows XP 64-Bit (x64) on XPS M1530
Is it possible? Yes it is! For those of us who enjoys Windows XP and need that 4GB+ ram for bragging rights, here is a HOWTO (with pictures) for you. This is working on a Dell XPS M1530 with an PM965 chipset, T9300 CPU, 4GB DDR2 ram, and 256MB GeForce 8600M GT video card. I will not guarantee that this will work on ALL Dell XPS M1530 systems. For those with the same laptop specs, this should work for you.
You will need:
- Basic knowledge of installing Windows
- A genuine Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit CD
- Drivers pack (downloaded in this thread). This will not include drivers for your video card, touchpad, and fingerprint.
- Agree that by following these steps, I am in no way liable for your actions and you will take full responsibility to any damage to your computer, if it may occur

Steps:
- Optional step, but recommended. Install the latest BIOS for your M1530 from the Dell website. More info on benefits of BIOS A11+ drivers here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=316195
- Download the essential drivers pack HERE: http://rapidshare.com/files/164905993/Windows_XP_x64_essential_drivers.zip.
Put this driver pack inside a flash drive or an external hard drive that uses a USB port. You will need this for later steps.
This essential drivers pack includes:
- Intel Mobile Chipset Driver
- Ricoh R5C832, R5C833, R5C843 Driver
- Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio Driver
- Marvell Yukon Ethernet Controller Driver
- Creative Labs Laptop Integrated Webcam Driver
- Intel Wireless WiFi Link Adapters Driver
*Most of these drivers are for other laptops such as the M1330, M1730, Inspiron, etc. that support Windows XP 64-Bit. Since these laptops share common hardwares, these drivers work fine on the M1530.
- Before installing XP 64-Bit you need to disable the Flash Cache Module and switch the hard drive mode from AHCI to ATA. To do this, restart the computer, and then press F2 to go to the BIOS.
In BIOS under Flash Cache Module, change it to OFF:
Then under SATA Operation, switch it to ATA:
More info on ATA vs. AHCI: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=187352
*You SHOULD NOT change ATA to AHCI after you install Windows XP because XP does not support it. You WILL get a glimpse of the blue screen of death and your computer will restart immediately after.
- Save changes and exit the BIOS menu.
- Insert your Windows XP 64-Bit CD and install it. I assume you know how to install Windows XP, so I will not go through the steps here.
- Once Windows is fully installed and you arrive at the desktop, copy the drivers pack you have downloaded into your computer and install them in this order (recommended):
- Intel Mobile Chipset Driver (chipset_XP_x64). Restart computer after installation.
- Ricoh R5C832, R5C833, R5C843 Driver (chipset2_XP_x64). Restart computer after installation.
- Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio Driver (audio_XP_x64)
- Marvell Yukon Ethernet Controller Driver (lan_XP_x64)
- Intel Wireless WiFi Link Adapters Driver (wlan_XP_x64)
- Creative Labs Laptop Integrated Webcam Driver (webcam_XP_x64). Restart computer after installation.
- Download and install video card drivers from LaptopVideo2Go.com.
I used v174.31
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=17741
More info on recommended video card drivers here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=278394
- Now you have essentially every driver installed, except for the touchpad and the biometric fingerprint device. If you need the touchpad and biometric fingerprint device drivers, you can download them here:
http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R170994&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=232901 (touchpad)
http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/drivers/windows.asp (fingerprint)
- Recommended step. Do all the Windows Update you can as they help secure your Windows and possibly fix bugs too.
- That's it! If I have missed something in particular, please let me know. I hope that this guide was useful and that you have successfully installed Windows XP 64-Bit on your M1530 as well. I will be updating this thread if needed.

Great Thread Mate
but I use Vista x64
+rep -
Excellent guide! Dell is sending me a x64 Vista disc so now I need to dig for a guide like this for Vista if such a thing exists. I like how everything's packed and ready to go.
-
Haha thanks. I wrote this guide right after I got rid of my Windows Vista x64.
-
Out of curiosity, why did you get rid of Vista x64?
-
-
Thanks for a very informative thread. I am running win xp 64 on M1330. I noticed that fingerprint reader driver is missing from your list..
.
It can be found on upek customer support -> downloads page:
I am using the same driver in my installation. -
I see. The only thing I do on mine is watch movies, browse and Photoshop (web design, etc) and I haven't had a slowdown yet. So I shouldn't worry about it hogging too much I guess. More space is always nice, no doubt. That's why I'm going x64 even if the differences are marginal. When 4GB sticks go down in price I'll upgrade my notebook to 8GB, as if 4GB wasn't enough for me haha.

Good stuff + rep

Fingerprint Scanner

The touchpad is for a Dell tablet that shares the same touchpad as the m1530
The finger scanner wont work unless you install these utilities (I haven't installed them because i dont use the scanner)

(The link only opens in Internet Explorer)
So there are your missing drivers -

hi.
i'm planning on dual booting XP x64 with Vista. My question is -
1. after i install Xp and the drivers, i will have to reinstall the vista bootloader using easyBCD so that i can boot into vista. But before i boot into vista, after the dual-boot install of XP, can i turn the flash cache module back ON? will it be a problem to boot into XP with it ON?
2. Also, can someone point me to the rite link as to where i can download the SATA AHCI drivers for XP x64 for my notebook?
Thanks in advance for your help. And thanx for the drivers pack hanime. makes things a lot easier. -
You welcome.
1) Hmm I've never tried easyBCD before, but I don't think XP will work when AHCI is set. As for the Flash Cache Module, I'm not sure. You can always enable/disable these settings in the BIOS to test out. It should not affect your OS because I did it before. -
ok. thanx again. will be installing it in a couple of days.

Firstly to the OP, thx for the guide and the links to the downloads. Worked like a charm, and XP x64 is doing a much better job in everything I throw at my laptop. Theirs really only been three things I've noticed
1) When I first started using the laptop, the video drivers seemed to magically uninstall themselves after a couple restarts. Frames and performance would drop significantly, and all I would do is reinstall the drivers and bang, good to go.
2) Volume seems to be hit and miss with various files. Games and mp3's have been good, but even cranked they aren't exactly....loud. And some xvid files I need to blast the equalization at 140-150% to be able to hear any voices, but others play just fine without the boost.
3) Network performance is subpar. I've got one m1530 running XP x64 installed using this guide and my downloads top out at 500 Kb/s, but usually more like 200 or 300 Kb/s. The other m1530 running Vista from dell is hitting 1.2 Mb/s, which is what my internet connection should be topping out at. My speeds are the same when connected via wireless G or ethernet.
I'm still trying to see if I can get any extra performance out of this stuff, but its not looking promising. Just when my games are starting to run normally, I'm running into network issues.. -
You are welcome.
1. Hmm I never knew that the video drivers would behave like this. I haven't play games much on mine, so I wouldn't know about its framerates/performance. Which one(s) have you installed by the way?
2. Yeah I noticed the sound was really low as compared to when in Vista. Related thread of mine: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=321804
3. Network is perfectly fine for me, wireless and ethernet. It's the same as in Vista. Very odd in your situation. -
Hey, this is an awesome thread, you included everything and it worked out almost perfectly. I just got one problem =/, I don't know if anyone else has got this but my laptop can't go into hibernate, I've only got the option of 'stand by' and 'shut down'. I've gone to the power options and there is no hibernate tab, or on any of the options. And I know its capable cause - obviously - it hibernated, slept, etc. all on Vista before reformatting.
-
I have an option for "Standby", which is kind of like "Hibernate". Don't know for sure if it's the same.

coeld some one help my with the drivers for
1 BCM2045
2 Data Interface
3 Data Interface -
Does the HDMI work if you follow this guide ? (both sound and video)
-
Driver pack isn't download able anymore
Maybe someone who can upload it again? -
This guide is fairly dated, Vista 64 SP2 is a lot better than XP 64 SP3 now IMO, especially since Vista was built based on a 64-bit design.
-
+1 vote to get these drivers again. I just installed XP Professional 64bit on my 1530 and love it! I've run both Vista and Win7 and XP pro seems to blow them away (yes I'm a performance troll.) Excelent guide. Anyone able to locate and post a link to the drivers?
-
On second thought I think I know what she did, I'll see about laoding all the drivers into a torrent which should keep it alive longer. In the mean time, for most of the drivers just go to support.dell.com and select the XPS m1730, windows xp, and then filter to windows xp x64. I haven't tested these but I assume they'll work, everything you need can most likley be found there.
