I'm going to have one of these laptops soon and I'd like to see if there is a comprehensive guide to maintaining the battery so it can last long.

    Anyone got a link?

    Thanks

There is no comprehensive guide. Everyone will give you slightly different advice.

My advice is to let the battery do its own thing. Around 11 months into your warranty, check the health of the battery, and if not satisfied, contact Dell for a free replacement battery.

Out of curiosity, what kind of battery life is everyone getting? Mine will only last about 1.5 hours doing web surfing.

my advice is very similiar to gpig's with one amendment, if you have an extended warranty put off replacing it for as long as possible, as you only get one battery replacement. Also if you're just gonna be sitting around constantly with it plugged in, pop the battery out (like for multiple days sitting around) the only risk is if you accidentally unplug it the lappy doesn't have its battery backup to fall back on.

I had an xps m1330 that I had pretty much every part of it fail overtime and they kept replacing the parts, not so with a battery.

I have the extended warranty, but it specifically states batteries are only covered for 12-months, not the full 3 years.

Not sure if this helps or not, OP....

But here is a really nice Battery Guide direct from the forum:
    Notebook Battery Guide

And, here is some information direct from Dell. : )

    Dell Laptop Battery FAQ

Q What can I do to make my battery last longer?
A There are several things you can do to make your battery last longer:

    * Choose the right battery. Under the same use conditions, a lower capacity battery will wear out faster than a higher capacity battery because it has to be charged more often.
    * Use the notebook's power saving controls to reduce battery use in your normal day. For example, turn the Bluetooth off if it is not needed; reduce the screen brightness when conditions permit.
    * Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures. If the system is exposed to extreme cold or hot temperatures, allow it to warm up/cool down before use and before charging.
    * Contrary to last decades' batteries, modern lithium ion batteries do not need to be fully discharged to maintain health.
    * All batteries wear with use and time. When you find the runtime is no longer satisfactory, it may be time to purchase a new Dell battery.

When I am not using my 6Cell I keep it stored in a cool, dark place, such as drawer. : )

XPS M1330's batteries were legendary! While I cannot say the same for the laptop (except for its design which in some ways trumps the new XPS), the battery life is like that of a Mac! And that thing is ~4 years old!
