My monitors have DisplayPort but not HDMI.

I've read so many articles about USB-C, HDMI, Thunderbolt, mini DisplayPort, DisplayPort etc, but still have no clue what actual product I would need to buy to make my DisplayPort-only Dell UltraSharp U2412M monitors connect to a new XPS 15.

I want them to add extra screens, not copy the laptop screen, so that I get three screens in total.

Using DisplayPort to HDMI or DVI-D to HDMI adapters, you could then try a Dell D3100 or TB16 dock. They support up to 3 external monitors.

    D3100: http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=bsd&cs=ukbsdt1&sku=452-BBOO

    TB16: http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sn...=uk&l=en&cs=ukbsdt1&sku=452-BCOY&price=329.99

(info states...a USB Type C to Dual DisplayPort 1.2 adapter is plugged into the Thunderbolt 3 port on the back of TB16 which is then connected to two DisplayPort cables plugged into the 5K monitor. Now I know your monitors are not 4K but that may also be the answer to your question with regards to your monitors having DisplayPort rather than HDMI outputs)

    The monitors don't have HDMI.

Yes I know, I looked up the connections of your particular monitor.

Reason for using the adapters is so you can then connect to either dock using HDMI cables.

How would I use a HDMI cable to connect a DisplayPort monitor to a dock?

    Thank you.

Only thing then is that if I wanted to use the USB-C port for something else then I'd have to disconnect my monitors.

Can that relay a DisplayPort signal from the laptop?

A bunch of TB3 docks are "coming soon" (that is, generally ready but likely considered too buggy to be released, because even underdog peripheral device makers don't want to release sth as buggy as the TB15). Though, I'd hold on until they are released, officially declared compatible with the XPS 9550/9560 and confirmed working by enough users (mind there are still some complaints with the Dell TB16).

I don't think those would let me connect a USB-C device and two DisplayPort monitors because they only have one DisplayPort port and two USB-C ports. One of the USB-C ports needs to be connected to the laptop and then the other and the DisplayPort port will be connected to the monitors.
