    Howdy XPS Users!

My brother has been on the phone trying to swap over his current 90w charger for the 130w for his XPS1645. Is there a way to elegantly explain our problem?

He's been telling technical support that his current charger heats up all the time. But technical support is wanting him to troubleshoot his laptop.

We're just wondering whats the correct way of explaining the issue? He's not getting any throttling or anything, but from me reading these forums, it seems like a healthy choice for his laptop!

    Thanks gang!

It really depends on which tech you(or your bro) come across. Make sure you tell them that Dell made it official for all 1645 to be supplied with a 130w adapter. Tell them it causes throttling as well as overall system instability. You deserve a 130w adapter for your 1645 for sure.

I have the 1640 and I just talked to the customer service rep about mine heating up and eventually ended up speaking to the manager. They put the deal thru and I eventually got the 130w adapter.

Does this apply ONLY to the 1645, or could I push it through for my 1647? (I just realized that they skipped 1646... total bomb? HA! j/k) I really haven't even stressed my lappy yet, and I might not ever, so maybe I'll never see it. Nonetheless, the last time I talked to Dell tech support, the guy said that the 90W is fine. He's a tech monkey, but I didn't want to push it so I said whatever.

After receiving my 1647 today I noticed that they gave me a 90W adapter :/ I guess I'll run SC2 and monitor my watt usage to see if there's a problem... Is there any easy way to confirm throttling?

The the 130Q adapter is much bigger and bulkier, and I don't think you should swap for that unless you really need to. All chargers get hot with use, just the way it is. Unless you feel like your system throttles after heavy use, etc. the current 90W adapter should serve you well I would think.

Run Throttlestop in monitoring/logging mode while playing a game (don't turn it on). Post the log in one of the throttling topics.

    I might be wrong, but:
1645 = 130W adapter (or should have it)
    1647 = 90W adapter (doesn't need 130W)

i don't think i have a problem with throttling because i have never tested for it. my problem with the AC adapter is that it would constantly make a clicking electrical noise when i was doing something on the laptop, like opening a browser or a file, etc.

since I am still under warranty, I contacted Dell, explained the problem to a helpful CS rep, he suggested a few troubleshoots, then went on to place the order to send me a new 130 watt ac adapter. when it arrived, i shipped back the old 90 watt ac adapter in the box it came in along with the return shipping label. the new 130 watt ac adapter is definitely bigger than the old one, probably almost twice as big but it solved my clicking noise problem.

For what it's worth, I got a free replacement power brick/charger from Dell for my Inspiron 1520 without having to send the old one back.

My old charger was leaking some kind of liquid out of the power brick. Once the rep realized this, he told me to dispose of it and not to worry about sending it back.

So if your power brick is leaking too, you can definitely get a new one and shouldn't need to send it back.

Racinggun you are partially right and wrong :)
It seems the components determine 1647 requirement for a 130W. My 1647 absolutely needs a 130W, it throttles immediately running Prime/Furmark on the 90W, but is back to normal on the 130W. I have the RGBLED however which consumes more power that the WLED.
    1647/RGBLED/Corei7 620/8GB/5730.
Throttles on 90W, fine on 130W.

I telephoned Dell to get my 130W adapter, told them it was getting very warm and after some insisting they said they'd send me the 130W adapter just to be on the safe side. But the 1647 with i7 620 and RGBLED does need the 130W adapter.
