You can also use the s-video dongle to get spdif coaxial audio. I haven't tried it on the xps 1530 but works fine on the inspiron 1420

Definitely doesn't work for the M1530, since the internel S/PDIF output of STAC9228 is connected only to the HDMI transmitter, but NOT to the S-Video out.
The adapter S-Video -> S/PDIF does work though on other Dell devices. A lot of people therefore assumed they'd get S/PDIF out of S-Video for the M1530, but that's not the case. It's even contained in the user manual:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xpsM1530/en/OM/HTML/about.htm#wp1212382
That means your choices are:
. 5.1 through analog headphone jacks
. 5.1 through HDMI
. 5.1 by means of external sound card (USB, Expresscard, ...) -
Can I use this adapter so I can get 5.1 sound on my Vostro 1500 ?
-
At least for the Vostro 1500 the manual says so:

I guess it should work.
