My Dell XPS M1530, running Windows 7, has died (video card). The only other computer I have is a Dell desktop, running Windows XP.

How would I go about getting my files off of a Samsung 830 SSD?

Get yourself a SATA cable, plug the drive in the desktop, retrieve your files, profit.

Alternatively a SATA to USB adapter would do the job.

    you can
1 get an external usb to sata kit
2 get external usb sata enclosure.
3 if you dell supports sata you can connect it there.

Can someone explain to me what exactly happens when I connect it to another computer, either directly from SATA or USB enclosure. Am I going to get the full Windows 7 OS, or will I just see my files?

Unless you set it up as the boot drive, you'll be able to see and access your files (which will include the Win 7 OS files, but these won't be loaded -- the computer will still load the OS from your boot drive).

That is if you connect the drive internally, if you hook it via a usb cable, just hook the drive to the computer when it's on and it'll get detected as an external drive.

Sorry, that should have read: "Unless you set it up as the boot drive, you'll just be able..."

Which may still be a bit confusing, what I was trying to say is that you won't get Win 7 loaded from that drive unless you hook it up as the boot drive, but you can still access the files on it.

I forgot to say you were correct in your post above. :p I just wated to point out that with USB, he could just hook the drive when the computer was already one.

But yeah anyways, just hook the drive and grab the data, it's ridiculously easy.

Thanks for the advice. I need to buy a new laptop soon, but wanna get my files off the SSD in the mean time. Any recommendations which USB enclosure/dock I should buy? The SSD has a very thin profile. I purchased the laptop kit, so it came with a plastic piece to make it fit most 2.5 enclosures.

I ordered up a USB enclosure. In the mean time, I decided to disconnect the HDD in my Dell Dimension 9200 desktop and connect the SSD. It goes through the Dell BIOS screen, but the computer restarts (tried several times) when it hits the Windows start up screen. Any suggestions?

Update: I hooked it up to a different desktop and it worked!
