I'm not an expert on this, but I've recently started playing around with this and I use 3 programs: Furmark, Prime95, and ThrottleStop.

Run Furmark and Prime95 to really tax the system, generate a lot of heat, and see how much punishment it can take. Furmark will also tell you what the current clock frequencies of the GPU are (should be 675 and 800). If your GPU is throttling, these frequencies will drop below those values.

Run ThottleStop to monitor your CPU cores.... if the multiplier drops below 12, or if either the CMod% or Chip% drops below 100, then you have throttling... make sure you have your system power plan set to "High Performance" and you have at least Prime95 running though, otherwise the CPU won't be running full out.

Currently, my laptop doesn't throttle any noticeable amount.

Ya, when I really really pushed it with Furmark and Prime95, then my multiplier dropped from 12 to the mid-11's... which it would be nice if it didn't do. Though considering I don't know of any games that max out the cpu to 100% constantly, I find it unlikely that I'll even get close to as hot as this during "real" usage.

My 1640 - with Throttlestop running monitoring only....I then run Furmark and Prime95 together....and as SOON as I start them both going, the multiplier drops to 6....it doesnt have to get hot or anything...it drops instantly.

So I'm picking up my 130W adapter today to see if this resolves the issue. if not, I'll be back onto Dell looking for some kind of resolution.
