I use my XPS M1330 pretty much exclusively on battery power. I usually charge it all night and then use it periodically during the day, usually anywhere from half an hour to an hour at a time, sometimes charging it between usages. I know this is not the best way to preserve the battery lifetime, my question is how often should I fully charge it and then fully discharge it to maximize the battery life?

best not to fully discharge. let it run down to 50-60% then recharge. If using with the ac on all the time, take out the battery.
