    Hi,

I have a 1645 with 15.6" full HD screen, the font is too small for me when set the screen to its native resolution 1920x1080, I am wondering whether it's possible to set it to 1366x768. The available option of 1280x720 is not good.

Thanks a lot and happy new year!

Right click on the desktop, choose screen resolution. Click on the dropdown, and then as you drag the slider down, it will show you each of the choices. I would think there should be something between 1920x1080 and 1280x720.

Typically on 1920x1080 screens there is an option for something like 1600x900 or 1440x900 which is equivelant, most 1080 screens I've had don't have the 1366x768 option as it's kind of a screwy resolution for anything other than native 1366x768 screens.

Just a thought, have you tried changing the DPI settings within windows, this should increase the size of fonts etc without affecting your resolution.

Just type dpi into the start menu search box, and open Make text and other items larger or smaller, if the presets aren't to your satisfaction you can set a custom DPI.

Thanks. I know how to set the screen resolution in the control panel. However there is no option for 1366x768. Just want to know if somebody knows some "hacking" ways.

    Thanks.
1920 divide by 1080 is quite close to 1366 divide by 768. I know old 1640 has option of 1366x768 screen.

Ahh, I see. I thought 1280x720 was the next one after 1920x1080.

Thanks. I know that. Still prefer to have 1366x768 instead of just increase the system font size.

Maybe try this. How to Add Custom Resolution to ATI | eHow.com

ATI is sometimes pretty ghetto when compared with NVIDIA, which has a simple custom controls in the control panel to do ANY resolution. For ATI, you only get advanced options when hooked up with certain external monitors / TVs.

But anyway, DPI scaling is awesome.

Thanks a lot. But the guide on eHow doesn't work. There is no "DALNonStandardModeBCD1" key in the registry.

try this. it works for me. :)
    /REGISTRY/hkeylocalMACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000

Then on the right side, find "DALNonStandardModesBCD1"
double click it, then enter this number on lowest line
    13 66 07 68 00 00 00 60
    then click OK, then restart
Then try again to adjust your resolution...

i found this in lowyat.net forum.

Replace with your screen with a native 720p (which is actually 1366x768).

Or run your screen at 1680x1050 or 1440x900.

If you don't like 720p, going to 768 isn't going to be much different...

    Wow.

Thank you so much!!! It worked!!!

However I had to manually add that key, it's not there by default.

Isn't it rather unprofitable lowering the resolution and get a blurry picture instead of just putting the DPI a little higher?

Picture quality is obiously bad on LCD-Screens if not operated at native resolution. But maybe you are half blind and do not see the difference. Would hurt my eyes if I had to work with that low resolution on my 1080p screen. ;)
It's ok for gaming and movies and generally moving pictures but imho not for actually working with texts, internet etc.

Found the answer myself, so if you are experiencing any of the above:

if you installed new drivers other than the original:
    -uninstall everything ATI from add/remove
-then go to device manager and click on the ati card under displays - click uninstall
    -restart comp
-download latest ati catalyst mobility (i know it works for sure with 11.4) and you will have an option fit to screen in the catalyst control center

works with the orginal drivers too, but you have to install R257949 driver from dell website (only install over a fresh install or over the original drivers that came with the laptop)

the reason for all this trouble that took me 6 hours to fix is that dell provides an incomplete version of the default display drivers that come with the laptop - way to go
