Hi there. Well, I don't really like my LCD screen, but I'm not sure if it's a problem of my screen or all the screens are the same (It's my first laptop and I don't know anyone with another M1530).
So, how could I test my screen? It's an AUO , and I find it very dark / dull.
I'm not sure if I could ask for a replacement, but I guess not (not a full refund, just a screen replacement).
Thanks

it never hurts to ask.

Well, since it's your first notebook I'll ask...do you have the display brightness turned up all the way? By default it'll dim the display on battery power. I have the "dreaded" Samsung display, and mine isn't dark or dim at all. In fact, it's sitting here now next to my old XPS M140, a Samsung 225BW 22 inch widescreen, a Samsung 930B, and a Viewsonic something or other. The notebook is actually the brightest screen in the room. Who'da thunk? So no, it's not a given that notebook displays are just generally dark or dull.
Assuming that it's not a case of having the display brightness turned down, then yes, if you're not happy with the display by all means should you contact Dell for a screen replacement, or a full system swap. Are you in the initial 21 days?
Notebooks are expensive. Don't settle for anything less than you think it should be. -
Is the screen grainy like many on the forum said it was? -
I would just open a blank text document (or create a plain white background) and just be the judge on how it looks. If you see tints of yellow or blue, or see a grainy/wavy likeness to it then well, its not a great screen and you should of gotten the LED one :-D

If you think your screen is bit dull you can play with Digital Vibrance or Contrast at NVIDIA Control Panel. Just simple tweak it will give a lot of difference.

Well, not to hijack the OP's thread about his AUO, but since you asked...
I'm not seeing it. I spent most of the afternoon playing with it yesterday, and watched a couple of shows on it last night (divx streaming) and I'm really having a hard time finding fault with it. And given that I knew it was going to be a Samsung, I was certainly prepared to find it unsatisfactory. But it's bright, the viewing angles are fine, the text on WSXGA+ is very good, and try as I might I can't see what people describe when they talk about graininess...ie, looking through a screen door or wax paper, sandy appearance, etc. It looks...good. Is it as bright as the 1440x900 LED? Probably not. But then I didn't buy the 1440x900 LED. -
All I gotta say is, Told Ya So Fountain!

Well, it might also be that I'm just not as discerning as some people. But it's fine in my opinion and that's all that really matters. And that's what should matter to the original poster as well...that the display he has is up to what he expects. Anything less and he should have Dell take care of it.

Well, I guess it's just "my problem", that I'm not used to using laptops.
And no, I can't ask for a refund as it's only allowed for 7 days in europe (it's been 3 weeks), plus i don't think they would refund me the shipping costs (150€, aka 233$, thanks DHL) plus I had to pay another 100€ at the customs to get the package (so if I ask for a refund I would have lost... 250€
.
I guess I'll just stick to it. It isn't that bad, but I have to use it with almost full brightness to read correctly (but I guess it's the same for every non-led screen).
Anyway, thanks for your help. -
Use the nvidia control pannel to play with the brightness/contrast/digital viberance to make it look how you want.

Digital Vibrance always makes things look better, just dont turn it up past medium low or you get alot of distortion
-
I don't know anything about European warranties, but can't you at least get the screen replaced? I don't see why a substandard display on a 3 week old notebook should be "your problem." Call Dell.
