I wanted to make a separate thread as I can't seem to figure this out and have failed twice in the general discussion thread.

Windows is driving me INSANE. My xps has been working well with no issues. The Fall Creators update gave me a BSOD (memory management) many months ago. Since then, I have done a 'windows fresh start' to clean install and it still hasn't helped.

Windows KEEPS trying to install 1709 and every time it's a BSOD. Been probably 20 times now. I don't give a **** about this update but I want it to stop forcing it on me while still giving me necessary security updates. What can I do? Of course, if you know an easy way to get 1709 to work past the BSOD that would be appreciated too :)

You shouldn't stay on an older Windows version, at some point it is going to be deprecated and you won't receive any security updates. The best option is to fix whatever is making you BSOD.

Did you try to update Windows 10 manually via the Media Creation tool? https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/software-download/windows10

Thank you both very much for your replies.

Is there no way to just wait until the next major update and somehow skip the Fall Creators Update?

I have not tried to do it manually via the media creation tool. I'm not familiar with that process. Is there any risk to my files and configured software in doing this? As I said, I tried Windows Fresh Start and it didn't work. Due to the nature of some of the stuff I use on my computer, it takes me many hours to get my computer reconfigured when I have to do a clean install so I really don't want to do this again if there is any way to avoid it.

You can delay/prevent the installation of the Fall Creators Update for as long as want by using the wushowhide download that I linked in my earlier post.

Thanks, I was going to try that until the next post made me feel like it was a security threat to do so by using an outdated version of Windows. So it sounds like I should be finding a way to make the update work?

Indeed you should find a way.
Have you checked if your BIOS is up to date?
Also see if it's maybe because of an attached device, disconnect everything but mouse, keyboard, speakers and display. If it works then it's a peripheral.

The major semi-annual updates like the Fall Creators Update are features updates, and they are separate from security updates. You can still get security updates if you are running an older version of Windows 10. Eventually, though, Microsoft will force you to update to a current features update when the version that you have gets more than, I think, 2 features updates behind the current version.

That said, I agree with the others. I doubt that the Fall Creators Update is the root cause of your problem, and it would be a good idea to figure out what the root cause of the problem actually is.

Again, I really appreciate the input and suggestions. Are there any good ways to try to figure out the root cause of the problem? As for attached devices, I literally just have an adapter in one USB port for my wireless mouse. I could take it out and try again but guessing that being the problem is unlikely.

Is it likely software or something else? I have a reasonably new BIOS version. I don't remember exactly which but I loaded whichever was the new and urgent one on Dell's site a few months ago.

For me, a first step in troubleshooting a problem is usually to use the Windows Event Viewer. I would look for error reports that were generated at the same time when a problem was occurring. Sometimes, that can give you a hint as to what software or hardware is the source of the problem. But, even if it doesn't, if you do a Google search for the Event ID number, you can usually find a fix for most errors.

I might note that, with Windows 10, there is a good chance that you will find some Event ID 10016 errors in the Event Viewer. They are usually related to Windows apps, the Windows Store, or Cortana. Most of those are more difficult to fix, but most of those don't cause any other problems, and they can safely be ignored.

Another thing that I might try is to open an Administrator Command Prompt and doing a system file scan to find and fix errors or corrupted Windows files. Type sfc /scannow. Then press Enter, and it will scan for and fix errors in Windows files. For me, this usually doesn't fix problems, but occasionally it does, and, if it does, it is a quick and easy fix.

Thanks you the advice here, I've done some digging and found this error the last BSOD I had via the reliability viewer:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/910336/windows-update-error-0x80070002-or-0x80070003

I followed those steps but it still failed. I downloaded Dell Update Assist and loaded all recommended drivers and tried again. It still failed. BSOD Memory_Management every time. I'm at a loss.

I tried to scan and fix corrupted files and that also didn't help. I can't wrap my head around this.

Is there a chance I can skip 1709 safely and then the next major update will work? Or if 1709 fails, then all future major updates will also fail?

I am resorting to try this now, but even that doesn't seem to work. It just says "there aren't any hidden updates to show". It isn't giving me the option to block an update?

Yes, you can do that. If you wait for the next major feature update, which should be coming in a couple of months, you will be able download and install it without ever installing the Fall Creators Update.

To do that, just use the wushowhide that I've mentioned, and set it up to "hide" the Fall Creators Update. That way, you will still be able to get security and bug fix updates, but the Fall Creators Update won't be downloaded or installed.

You don't want to click on "show hidden updates". Instead, click on "hide updates". Doing that will pull up a list of available updates, and you can check any on that list that you don't want to be installed. After doing that, just click on "next". Later, if you want to install any updates that have blocked, that is when you would click on "show hidden updates" to unblock them.
