It started about a week ago. All the sudden I went to pick up my laptop while it was open and the screen just shut off. The computer was running, but the screen wouldn't come back on. I tried closing it and opening it and it didn't do anything....so I turned it off and back on and it would flicker light in the bottom right hand corner but no image would appear.
Then eventually, after I kept trying it just started working again like normal until yesterday when I was watching a video and all the sudden it just shut the screen off....and I tried everything and for four hours it wouldn't turn back on.
Now its working again but when I adjust the screen or move it too much, it will shut off...but now when I close it and reopen it it works (sometime it takes like 5 times) again.
This is my only computer and it contains all of my information. It would be extremely difficult to have this fixed if I had to send it in to Dell for weeks at a time. I don't remember when I bought my laptop but I know it isn't even a year old. This is the first problem I've had with it (except for a couple of broken/stuck pixels which I've just chosen to ignore)....but it is not functional and I'm worried at any time its just going to crap out on me.
To note, I haven't done anything differently like install updated drivers or anything like that. I haven' adjusted hardware settings at all and I haven't messed with any settings that should in any way affect the computer.
Does anyone know anything about a problem like this?

Do you have an external monitor? When the screen turns black, try to connect the laptop to the external screen to see if the system still running. The button is next to the f12.

It's very possible it could be a loose wire seeing that you fiddling around with it made it come back on, but as hanming said check with an external monitor, otherwise if you are comfortable with it pop open the computer and check the LCD wiring, lots of manuals to do so if you just do a search.

I can try the external monitor thing next time it acts up, but won't cracking the sucker open void my warranty?
Like I said, its a pain in the to have to mail it in, but if it means doing that vs. living with this problem and thereby impending doom and then having it break fully after the warranty expires next May, I'd rather just get it over with over Christmas break or something -
No... opening the laptop will not void the warranty. By the way, i think all SXPS 13 users have inhome services. The dell tech will come to your house to replace your monitor once he got the part.

Yeah I called Dell yesterday after I plugged in an external monitor and it worked. I'm working on it right now, using an old square CRT monitor with like max resolution of 800x600. Its painful.
They said they are shipping out the parts and a technician will get in touch with me. He told me either today (Thursday...Thanksgiving lol) or tomorrow he'd call.
Problem is, I'm only going to be back here until Saturday, then I have to go back to school...so I'm simply going to tell them...ship the parts again and send a technician to my apartment at school....that is if they can't do it tomorrow afternoon sometime. ers.
So I have a new theory about what is wrong, as well. It turns out, that if you sit the laptop in the right light you can DEFINITELY see the screen...its just not backlit in anyway at all....which means its next to impossible to read and you can't tell anything is on it except if you're basically pressing your nose up against it.
So I guess it has something to do with the backlight.
This is really inconvenient but at least they're coming to fix it...and they're going to fix the missing rubber pad on the left side of the touchpad that came off a couple months ago.
I am having SERIOUS screen issues with my Studio XPS 1340
