I was travelling yesterday, and I had my 1645 in my backpack, in a neoprene sleave. I must have put the backpack down too hard somewhere, because when I removed it from the sleeve at home, It had a large gash in the front and the top cover was cracked. See photo...

The machine works fine, but now has a HUGE hole in it. I have "Complete Care", but is this covered? How would I even describe what the issue is?

    I can't believe I did this to a 2 month old Laptop....

Any advice would be most appreciated....

Also...what the US Based XPS Support number?

OUCHHHHH. That sucks. I would definitely call DELL. You might even get a replacement unit. That number should be good for XPS support 1-877-293-1196

    I have 3 years Complete Care w/Accidental.
I would assume with your Complete Care that you purchased you Accidental? Dell Keeps changing the "terms" around.

As long as your Complete Care covers Accidental you should be good.
Check your Specs to sure you have it covered.

Also call: 1-800-232-8544 (24/7) (that is the number I have called in the past).

    My specs say this:

900-3981 1 CompleteCare Accidental DamageProtection, Inspiron, 2 Year

    Assume that should be good????

Interesting.. I set my laptop down on concrete recently (inside my backpack) and it got knicked in the same area. I was able to call it in and they repaired it (the repair techs hate doing this, as it takes them a good 30-50 minutes), but it's interesting to see a similar (albeit more intense) situation.

Even if it wasn't covered by the warranty, you could get a chassis for like $30 bucks, just hope the motherboard wasn't damage

I would take it apart to check ... just to be sure

You have CompleteCare, which is accidental damage coverage. They'll fix it or replace it..

I just called. They are sending me a box to send it th repair depot. What is bothersome, is that now I will be without the laptop for a couple of weeks.

Call back and demand to have a technician come out. XPS Systems have in home service, it is unacceptable that they ask you to send it in.

That's sucks :( @jakertberry said they came out to do the repair for him. I would try and call back and see what a Repair Tech can do that way. Or push for a replacement. Don't settle for sending into depot if you don't want to. Also see Peterf's post below

Yep IT was already covered above, but thanks for taking the time to point that out. lol.

Question....if I do decide to send it in...what are my options as far as retaining my disk and settings? I wouldn't want to take another day to reconfigure a new system.

    Do I have any options?

Just keep the HD...or clone it if your concerned. Id ask for a replacement system and swap the drives out.

This is interesting. I would have expected them to reject your claim based on the fact that Complete Care doesn't often cover superficial damage that does not impede the use of the system.

Look on the bright side, they did. ;)

I'm not sure how to clone the drive. I if there is an easy DIY, i'd love to see it.

If I kept the drive and swapped it with the one in the new system, is it simplistic to assume that my new system would immediately mirror what I had on old system?

    (apologies, i'm kind of green)

    Good News...

I called and had the issue escalated and they are sending me a replacement. Now I just need to decide if I want swap the drives or start from scratch.

Are there any issues with swapping the drive?

In Canada, CompleteCare does not include inhome service, as far as I know anyways.

Weird, what does your Warranty Status thing say in your Dell Support page?

Mine says Complete Care, but also Return to Depot or something. Should they be coming to my house to fix any issues?

In order to get them to replace my LCD, I had to argue with them endlessly until they said "We can do it just this once, but next time you have to send it to the depot".

That is correct. The XPS line in Canada does not have in-home warranty by default. It is a separate upgrade.
