So I just recieved my 3D XPS today, and I like it. I bought the HP Envy 17 3D back in December and used it for a month (HP 30 day trial policy) and I can say that the XPS definitely runs cooler and quieter. Of course that Envy 17 was with the crappier core i7 not the Sandy Bridge i7-2720qm that this one has.

I also ordered another XPS 17 non-3D today in order to take advantage of the $400 coupons available.

The one I recieved today is a 3D edition, 2720qm, 550m, backlit keyboard, 6230 wifi, 4gb ram, 500 gb hdd, yada, yada, yada (Ordered Mar 31)

The other one I ordered today is almost the same but without 3D (2720qm with Optimus, 1080p screen, 550m, backlit keyboard, 6230wifi, 4gbram, 500gb HDD, yada, yada, yada..)

Basically the same specs except one is NVIDIA 3D Vision and the other is NVIDIA Optimus, and they cost alomost the same.

I really like the screen on this 3D version and hope the non-3D version has the similar screen brightness, etc.

However I dont think anyone has the non-3D version with the 1080p screen yet? right? So, the non-3D version might have lower brightness levels.

I know alot of people are complaining about Optimus querkyness, but I think in the long run the kinks will get worked out through driver updates. However the 3D Vison XPS is stuck with no ability to turn on the Intel 300 IGP due to hardware construction so I feel that you actually get more for your money with the non-3D model (2 graphics processors instead of one). I really dont care about 3D, I just wanted the nicer 1080p screen anyways.
What do you guys think? Keep the 3D or keep the Optimus?

I loaded up Streetfighter IV on this 3D edition and will put up some youtube vids in action. Tommorow I'll post some COD Black ops videos on youtube.

If you like the 3D, keep it and enjoy it. No need to mess around with the other laptop. I myself have ordered the 1080P 3D XPS 17 which should arrive next week and I am mostly looking forward to the 1080P :)

If everything else was the same, I'd definitelly keep the Optimus.

But as the non-3D 1080p screen has only been offered since monday, nobody yet knows how the non-3D screen performs. The bad contrast, color reproduction and black values of the 1600*900 screen made me go the 3D road. If the non-3D display would be as good as the 3D display, I'd regret not having waited for it. Well... "if"...

Is the non 3D, 1080p laptop screen glossy or matte? I asked a sales rep in the chat room and he said it was glossy. On the Australia Dell site, it was listed as AG for anti glare(matte). When I went to the USA site to build one, I clicked on the "help me choose" link for the screen options. I then clicked on the "side by side" comparison link. It stated the non 3D, 1080p screen was Anti glare, while all the other screens were true life(glossy).

Let us know what type of screen the non 3d, 1080p screen really is when you get your 2nd laptop. Please post youtube videos of that machine as well.

The 3D screen should be brighter. It has a 400 brightness rating, while the non 3 D screen has a 300 brightness rating.

I chatted with another dell rep in their chat room. He double checked and said the non 3D, 1080p screen is glossy(true life in the USA). I hope they offer a matte screen in the future. I'm not a fan of all the glare from glossy screens.

I think the 3D screen should probably look a little bit better. It has a higher brightness score and a better contrast ratio. You should also get 4 slots for memory instead of two. But, I'd like the non 3D version since Optimus would work(hopefully). Plus, that laptop would probably run cooler, with less fan noise and a longer battery life. You should be able to configure the non 3d, 1080p laptop several hundred dollars cheaper too(when dell lets you choose all the options you want). Since you'll be getting both screens, please give us your feedback on how they compare. Your feedback will be much appreciated.

I actually almost did the same thing. If all options are the same it would only save roughly $75 ~ $80 for the non-3D (3D w/o glasses). I did call to try and cancel the 3D version before ordering the non-3D version, the Dell rep stated that if I'm willing to keep the 3D version that they would credit me back $125. I could use this towards a pair of 3D glasses. What do you guys think? Should I keep the 3D version? It should arrive anytime today.

    @anodize---The non-3D one cost $1031.76 after shipping/taxes and the 3D one cost $1112.19 after taxes/shipping ($9 shipping to Hawaii).

I'm going to try to use this 3D version as long as I can with the hope of getting the other laptop in and comparing the two together. They are both great deals, but I dont know how soon the other one will get here.

Ill try to put up some youtube vids laterz.
