Hey, I noticed my new Studio XPS 1647 has what looks to be an IR receiver in the front. Device Manager lists it too but I never got a remote with my machine?

    Is this normal?

You can use any Windows Media Center compatible remote with the XPS. It does not come with one.

You can get a Dell travel remote on ebay for cheap.

I also use a NU851. It looks exactly the same as the NU991. Anyone know if there is any difference?

I do believe if you order NU991, you get NU851 - that's what I got anyway. Not sure if there is really a NU991. Everyone I've ever heard buy one gets NU851.

I'm looking for a remote control for my Dell too. Does that Dell IR Remote allow you to turn off the computer too? Does it allow you to play video's with non-Microsoft mediaplayers too (like VLC, iTunes, XBMC, etc.) ?

Are there any other good remote controls out there?

Any program that you can control with the media keys on the keyboard you should be able to control the same way with the remote. If you're looking for a remote, get a Logitech Harmony, they're the best remotes out there, you won't regret it.
