...then I highly recommend the standalone desktop version by Upek.

The cheapest I could find was buy.com ($41.08 with 5% off coupon available everywhere).
    http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=206854670

Mine came with the 5.8.2 version of their software, but the build date of the one posted in the "Upek" thread was a bit higher, so I used that one... ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=297962)

The reader operates exactly the same way as the one in the laptop (duh? same brand and same software).

If you have encrypted files from your laptop, you can open them on your desktop and vice versa...

It's a very-well designed, solid piece or hardware. Hats off to upek.

Disclaimer: I have no connections with upek or buy.com :D

    I don't use mine.

My hdd isn't encripted or anything like that (I don't have any files that are of that level of importance and hence warrant that level of security)

So I couldn't logically justify putting my personal biometric data on to a machine thats realistically quite easy to hack.

For me, it's the exact opposite. I have to try VERY hard for both readers to NOT read my fingers correctly. Of course, it's a different story for my wife. She is like you; she has to try 5 times before it gets a good reading. The problem is not the readers, it's the condition of the fingers (shallow grooves, too dry, too small, etc etc).

Anyways... Just wanted to let people know that there is a desktop companion out there if they are happy with it.
