Hey guys first post here... I tried searching on the site about this issue but I couldn't find anything, so I have a this problem with playing back HEVC coded 10-bit 4k video on my laptop.
I have the 4k Display, core i7, 960m, 16gb ram model and with other 4k video it does a good job but this just stutters... Ive tried several different media players that supposedly have the codec. I even went into the nvidia settings and set the software to make use of the 2gb 960m card, I know skylake does not have hardware codec acceleration but really a core i7 with hd 540 is going to crap out on 4k even if it does not prioritize the dedicated video card lol.
The media file is planet earth "2" and it is a 14gb file 2160p... maybe trans coding it might help?
Any suggestions will be appreciated thanks.

The 4K UHD is wide-gamut but is not 10-bit. I'm not sure how exactly it is with 10-bit support for external display, AFAIK NVidia GTX doesn't support 10-bit output in OpenGL but no clue if it does for video playback.
See if these help...

Yea as I suspected skylake is not up to par with .264 so yea I guess like I said earlier I'll have to transcode it to an 8 bit platform to watch it on my laptop. I'll put the file on a USB stick and see if it will play back on my 4K TV in the morning. ..... thanks for the help my man

Not much help but its morning over here. Have you tried it?

Skylake can't decode it, but that might mean it has to be decoded by the NVidia. Btw make sure it is enabled in NVidia configuration, some programs might default to the iGPU.
Question is what NVidia can do with it. The UHD can't show it properly, but it'd be good enough if it could show it in 8 bit. -
Yea if you read my first post I said I went to the nvidia config screen and enabled that program to only use the nvidia gpu I even set the card to run all the time and it kind of helped a little bit

Yea I tried it on my 4K Samsung tv from 2013 and damn it looks like I'm starring right outside of a window into nature lol it's awesome , sadly my xps 15 from late 2015 still has stuttering issues with 10 bit but I'll try 8 bit when I get home from work

Okay then. Good luck

Hi once again. According to my findings: in order to decode, you CPU has to run this with GPU acceleration. So if it doesn't work out, the maybe something somewhere isn't using your Nvidia GPU. I don't have your model, so I can't confirm myself.
