I had to post as the excitement is killing me. Having gone with an experiment I purchase a 1330 from the United States. Here in Canada we are gypped good deals while having to pay more for certain things. Also we don't have the same options. For example no thin and light led.

So my experiment, purchased a brand new never opened xps m1330 on ebay, total after shipping $1577.00

    1) NEW Dell XPS M1330 Laptop with the following specifications:

    Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2ghz processor (800mhz FSB, 4MB cache)
    Windows Vista Home Premium
    Tuxedo Black color
3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667mhz RAM
Slim and Light LED Display with VGA camera
128mb GeForce 8400m GS Video card
    160GB SATA 7200RPM Hard drive
    DVD-RW (dvd and cd burner)
    Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N wifi card
Dell Wirless 355 Bluetooth Module (2.0+EDR)
    15months McAfee SecurityCenter
6 cell AND 9 cell battery
    4 year warranty
    1 year lojack
    Biometric fingerprint reader
Datasafe 10gb online backup for 1 year

I won the auction and paid for it on Friday December 28th. As per the tracking it was sent from the united states immediately. Saturday it arrived in Florida and was on a plane headed for Canada. December 31st it made it to Canada, went through customs and cleared a few hours later. I checked the tracking today and sure enough it is on a truck for delivery to me today!! So luckily I do not have to wait an extreme long time for dell to make my order.

I can't wait to get home and hit the post office.

Now in this experiment and purchase of mine I hope to avoid Brokergage and duty fees.

Here are my steps taken to try and avoid this.

Box was opened up, note was added inside saying "Hey man, you forgot this when you came to visit. I hope this gets to you safe and sound."

The made in Malaysia sticker was taken off the box. The value set at $500. Marked as gift and manufactured in the US. Shipped expedited with USPS.

I am really keeping y fingers crossed so I do not get dinged the extra fees. But judging by the fast processing who knows.

Also regarding the warranty. The rep I spoke to in the United States said I would have no trouble at all having the warranty transferred to me in Canada. I read people saying ti had to be an international warranty. This is not the case. For the warranty, having an international one means being able to use the repair/support services in that country. If the warranty is in the United States all I need to do is call them and send it to them when I have problems.

I will post later once I pickup the laptop and will let you guys now how it went. Still got my fingers and toes crossed with the duty and brokerage fees.

In the end if this system was purchased in Canada and if we had the same options available to purchase then I would have had to spend $2500.

If I purchased in the united states (with the current promotion) and lived in the united states the total after taxes would be $2034. So either way I look at it I still paid less then retail.

I will keep you all posted!

If it cleared customs quickly, that is the good news because if there was a problem, they would initiate a secondary and then start by contacting the person who shipped it.

Thats the good news. We have spoken of the warranty I believe. I know what the rep told you but this won't occur because of the strict alliance between Dell USA and Canada. I went through this personally and was SOL about a year ago.

If you want warranty work done on your laptop you have to leave the registered owners address in the States, ship it there, they ship it to Dell and it is returned there.

There is absolutely no way around this and there are plenty here who have been through this. You cannot ship warranty repairwork to the US from Canada directly and vice versa.

It will also be similar if you have problems on initial receipt such as the infamous squeal. You cannot initiate a product return to the US from Canada. You can follow the above routing through your friends however.

Thanks for the info. We haven't done the service tag change request yet. We were waiting till I officially get it. I will call the rep I spoke to and get her to tell me the truth. She blatantly said it didn't matter if it was being shipped from Canada and if she is not correct then I want her to know. I trust what you are telling me. Any idea of other options in case we cannot keep it under his address?

It's official!! XPS arrived without any troubles. Leaving this message as we speak. No whine or any reported issues as of yet *knocks on wood*.

Everything was as listed. What a beautiful little laptop. Time to get used to the differnt feel of machine and get used to the small touchepad.

I checked and everything advertised as configured is here. EVERYTHING woot!!! I am so glad I only had to wait 2 buisness days for it (5 days total).

Oh yeah, no duty fees and no brokerage charges muhahahaha!!! Take that Canada CUSTOMS!!!

LOL I am hoping it won't. Even if it does start I am not sure I will hear it. I always have my turtle tank running all the time or other things going on in the background. Though it wouid be nice to have no whine at all.

Not even the turtle tank will save you if your ears can pick up the sound.

Hmm.. there is something about the whine that will get to you even if the background is really loud... it basically just starts hurting your ears after a while...

I also hate Canadian customs, so here is another tip. Get the seller to mark the package as "Return item" or "warranty return" and make sure the receipt is mailed separately.

That's a wicked tip. I am having him mail me the original packing slip and receipt separately.
