Hey, just wanted to see if anyone else was having this strange problem. I have an 1640 that the wifi light/antena keeps going out on me. Device manager say's that the 5300 is working fine but it's like the antena goes out and the light goes off and there are no connections. This seems to only happen when I am using the battery and not pluged into the wall. I am running windows 7 and the latest drivers installed. I also connect @ home with a cisco/linksys business class ap. I have to reboot for it to come back on.

Go to your device manager find your Wi-Fi card right click it and go to "Properties". Look for the power management tab on the far right on top in your Wi-Fi cards settings and make sure "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked. This should resolve the issue.

I think that I have tried this but will try again. I think that it's happened even when I am using the computer, not when it sits there without use.

Intel.com has an automated software scan to be sure you have the latest drivers. Be sure your wireless drivers are up to date as well. I had some trouble with my 5300 on a first install of Win 7, but updated drivers made it go away.

I went back to the older driver and it seems to be working, I also uncheck the allow computer to shut off device to save power. I'll see how long it works...

well still disconnects but not as often. Seems to do it when I'm running on battery and the laptop is hot. get's really hot right by the card itself on the bottom of the computer.

i also had major issues with my intel 5300 wifi disconnecting and had the card replaced 3 times by dell. Finally dell sent me a replacement 6250 and the issue is completely gone.
