I haven't visited the forums for probably about two months now, just because I wasn't intending on buying a new laptop ("you use me and then leave me!"). But, hey, even if you're not getting a new laptop, this place is great to keep up to date about laptop news. So I just popped on and saw a thing on the NVIDIA chips and overheating problems. Yeah, I know, "that's not NEW news, that's OLD news!!" Sorry, I've been busy, so sue me. OK? Anyways, it's interesting because my brother, who owns an M1710 that he got just before the M1730s were introduced, tried to play a game and it kept shutting down due to overheating. Now, that really ticked him off because the M1710s were also marketed as "gaming-directed," like their successor, the M1730. And this game is about a year old (i.e., not Crysis).
So I do not dispute AT ALL that this is a problem. But what I find funny is the psychology of the situation. Meaning, now that people know that it's a possible problem, suddenly it's rampant. I mean, I was on here three months ago and nobody was complaining about it. Now, I see that the entire first page is devoted to "I'm so mad, overheating problems, grrr!!" and so on. It was sort of like the grainy screen phase, where people -- myself included -- were reading about it and going, "uh, I don't know if I have a grainy screen or not, but I know it's a problem, so I bet my screen is grainy." If nobody knew that was an issue, I wonder how many people really would have said, "you know, this screen really looks grainy." Maybe a third of the people? Who knows.
Anyways, the point being, it's funny how easy it is to influence people. And maybe this thread doesn't belong in the forum. If so, just move it. Or delete it. Or whatever.

Will I be happy about it? No. Is it the biggest disaster, do I regret buying my laptop, which has performed for me excellently? Not at all. So far, after two months of use, I'm thrilled with the size, weight and, most importantly, performance of the m1330.
I do hope it doesn't develop the GPU problem, but if it does, Dell will fix it. End of problem.
I do think people are blowing this out of proportion, but that's my opinion... -
The best part about having a nice warranty on mine is that I don't worry about overheating because they will fix it if it breaks. Also at the college I am going to they have Dell technicians right on campus and I'm gonna be working in the IT department so getting it fixed will be a piece of cake.
Interesting observation
