"It looks like Dell is finally readying a followup to its M1710 speedster with the XPS M1730. The 17-inch laptop will of course be packing some Santa Rosa muscle, but according to rumors Dell's also going to provide that new Core 2 Extreme X7800 chip for the real speed demons / big spenders out there. For graphics the base models will be getting an NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GS card with 256MB of memory, with a 512MB GeForce 8700M GT waiting in the wings. Other rumored specs include 4GB max of RAM and a 512MB or 1GB Intel Turbo Memory option, Bluetooth 2.0, Blu-ray and that welcome numeric keypad addition. The word is this one will go on sale August 27th, and while the paint job is bordering on "crime against humanity," hopefully Dell will have a few more acceptable options to decorate this gaming beast whenever it does hit the market."

    edit: new info

For those of you out there who are actually interested in this thing (and we know there's a few), we've got some additional details and a slew of photos on the new Dell XPS M1730 that should make you very happy. The first juicy tidbit concerns the graphics chipset, which now looks like it will be two NVIDIA GeForce GO 8700M GTs coupled using SLI, which should make the performance somewhat blazing (and the temperature downright fiery), additionally, the system can / will utilize high capacity SSDs (a feature which we've seen in other gamer-targeted laptops lately). If you really wanna get to know the guts of this monstrosity, however, you should hit the photo gallery. -engadget

The lid doesn't look bad, but the wristrest area looks really really bad with the 'faux' design. Just my opinion though :p

That thing is ugly. The front is ok, but the back is god awful. What was Dell thinking? All their new laptops except for the 13 inch XPS are ugly.

I wonder why they don't just stick with that design for the m1730. I just don't understand that weird red....wings(??) design choice.

My first impression was " wow kinda cool!" but that didn't last more than a few sec. I thought it looked like a carbon fiber design, similar to the asus g1s, but its all faded looking..I dont know..why does "gamer" have to always be associated with something that has lights that glow and (ugly) varying color schemes?

We don't know if it's really going to end up looking like that. Or even if that's the real deal. But regardless, if it is, I think it doesn't look too bad. Hopefully we'll get some more options too. It's nice to see that dell is finally updating it's lineup. How where's the 15.4" XPS M1540?

Why doesn't dell stick with a good design?

The M1330 looks like a winner, and they follow it up with this loser?

While it definitely needs a "quieter" visual style, it looks pretty decent. I dont know exactly what the little screen by the power button is for, but I"m sure we'll find out soon enough. Also, the pics make it look like the play/pause/etc buttons on the bottom are just little stickers taped on just for the pic, lol

Wow. Thats all I can say....Its fake carbon fiber, or at least, its trying to be. The lid is odd...Too flashy, but not in a sophisticated way like the last one, very crude. It looks like they tried to adapt the look of the faker-boy riced Civics to a laptop. Ick.

And the base 8600GS graphics is PATHETIC. Theres no other word for it. 8700GT should have been standard, and the only GPU until the 8800M comes out, but no, they make it so that the base XPS can be outrun by a good number of 14" business/gaming notebooks (Asus V2S and F8Sv/a, Compal IFT00, Zepto 6224W) and full selection of 15.4" notebooks. Despicable.

Lesdelliens was also the first one with full specs and pics of the 1520/1720, so I doubt that this is a fake, unfortunate as that is.

Yeah - fake or no fake, bottom line is that this first "prototype" (I hope) is not a good step. The market is different now and there are many other solid gaming laptops out there like the Sager 5790 for much less with solid GPU's and much better looks/weight/button placement, etc.

I'm sure this is not the final version and come August 27th we will all be surprised....maybe.

That thing takes ugly to whole new levels.
Maybe it looks better than its picture, but I find it hard to believe that's really the design they came up with -- especially when you consider how the M1330 is so sleek looking.

Do we know if this thing has DVI/HDMI? That's the main reason I didn't get the 1720.

And why have we been waiting for it, if it was going to ship with only an 8700? My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that the 7950GTX beats the 8700-I mean it's just an overclocked 8600.

I assumed we've been waiting for the 8800...so where is it?

I'm torn between this than and a Macbook Pro (main reason I didn't buy THAT is the non user replaceable hard drive, or I would have bought it at launch).

Regarding the looks, personally I don't much care. It's kind of interesting, if nothing else.

Where's the so-so option in the poll?

Yeah, they do need a bit quieter of a color scheme. Hopefully they'll take a page from the Inspiron line and offer different options there.

Hopefully by "waiting in the wings" it means the 8700M GT is an upgrade option. If that means it will be offered but not at launch time, the 8600M GS is a very underwhelming max option for a high-end 17-inch model.

Might be worth it if I had millions, but I see no good reason to get it over the 1520 I did get in practical terms.

8800 won't be out for a while from what I heard (maybe another 2-3 months). So Dell can't wait that long to launch the XPS successor. After looking at Inspiron 1720 picture I'm pretty convinced that XPS 1730 is photoshopped from 1720.

Seems to me a bit pointless then to wait for the M1730, as the only upside seems to be a better processor. Dell Uk ar no longer charging more for the T7600G (the overclockable version) its the same price as the T7600. A colleague of mine had this laptop on Saturday and has already clocked it to 3Ghz - completely stable.

this looks very similar build to the 1710. Does that mean it might be possible to fit a 8700M in an XPS1710? Replaceable parts basically? :)

I'm surprised Nvidia dont have a deal with laptop company (e.g. Dell) to spearhead their Go 8800 range. Maybe its too early yet?

The last rumor I heard was supposedly Q3...which means this month or next (if the rumor holds true).

Which would be in the right time frame for this system.

I wonder-maybe this system's specs are wrong? Maybe it's really going to ship with an 8700GT for low end, 8800 for high end? THAT would make sense (and is what I was expecting).

Right now, the 1710 is available, and is considerably more powerful.

    Hi guys

I hope it's okay to link to another forum, but you may want to check out the M1730 side and bottom pictures. They indicate that it has a different cooling system to the Inspiron 1720 (multiple fans, which some are speculating/hoping means SLI), as well as things like DVI etc.

It doesn't change the fact that's its ugly or rather thick, but it's certainly not Photoshopped. I'm almost sure there will be other colour schemes, I guess we can only hope that they're a little more 'refined'.

    Kind regards
