I have to say it is very likely a modified 1720 laptop with custom paint job and keyboard. Although the photo looks authentic, but the color theme is inconsistent and it does not fit into the silvery look of the existing XPS lineup.

Hi knn123
I agree it's inconsistent and ugly, but it would be hard to fake the details that are now being released. Apparently someone has access to the service manual and the details seem to verify the leaked pictures.
Kind regards -
wait for it.............. it is thicker than the 1720
-
Jonty, how do you know the person is telling the truth? It seems so easy to say/fabricate anything on the net that I just find it unconvincing. I also don't see how the service manual is connected to the photos. Even if the service manual is true, but the "design" can still be fake. -
Sorry, I didn't mean to disagree, I hope like you that this isn't the final design and I agree that there's a lot of speculation, thus everything should be taken with a pinch of salt.
However, the French forum that produced the first pictures does have a reliable history of leaking accurate information. If the service manual (different source) does exist (there's no proof), some of the details would make a lot of sense and corroborate the rumoured specifications.
For instance, the underside photo shows very elaborate cooling that isn't present in any of the other models. This would seem to lend credence to the SLI theory, as would the 230W power supply that the service manual and leaked specifications mention.
The gaming LCD and backlit keys (similar to those on Logitech's G15 keyboard) also make sense, given that Dell already uses Logitech components (like the built-in webcams) and that it seems an odd inclusion to a supposedly Photoshopped photo.
Anyway, I guess we'll all find out soon enough. There was quote in Games for Windows magazine (in print, if that makes it more reliable) that Dell's laptop division will make a big announcement in the coming weeks, so August 27th would fit with that timescale.
Kind regards -
That is just butt ugly. Come on Dell, you can do better than that, can't you??
I know that the lack of 8800 is because the mobile version has not been released yet, but apart from that, the specs aren't bad. But HOLY CRAP...... she's hideous!! -
let me draw a picture some of you might understand:
-
If it doesn't, it's pointless, though I guess if they QUICKLY add it in there it would be okay (except for people who buy it with the pointless 8700!)
-
Also I hope this DOESN'T have SLI, because that means an Nvidia chipset, and I'd much rather have Intel. SLI would be pointless anyway unless they can get dual 8800s in there. Dual 8700s would be completely pointless, since they'd be destroyed in every possible way by a single 8800.
-
Design/looks - Ewww!
Specs (with an 8800m down the road) - Hell yeah! -
wow, according to this poll, 80% of the people voted hate the design. I hope Dell is looking at these forums and change something with the 1730.
-
This has got to be one of the flugiest laptop designs I've ever seen. Is Dell out of his mind? If that's truly the new m1730, they should keep the old design and simply update the components.

SWEEET! Not that it's high on my priority list, but I like how it looks. I'll probably get blue (although all four colors look nice.)
If this thing had an 8800 in it, it would be my dream system, but heck, I've been waiting over a year now, I may just bite. -
another cool feature: back-lit keyboard! yay!

What about liquid cooling? That's something that Alienware's already managed to integrate into a notebook. If Dell's newest and best gaming notebook still uses fans, it is sure to be trampled by competitors who are figuring out how to use liquid cooling. And with a dual graphics configuration in the minimal space of a notebook, the thing in itself will create global warming.
Edit: And wait! Where the heck is the VGA port?! They think they can get away with only a DVI? What if your monitor is VGA only... Well, I guess you're screwed, at least if you want to connect to your monitor (mind you, if it is a VGA only monitor, it probably isn't too great anyway), but still, what if you don't feel like dishing out for a real good monitor?
You know... I could be wrong, maybe I didn't see the VGA port. Anyways, you guys look for yourself at the laptop pics and verify if I am correct. (Apologies if I'm wrong!) -
DVI ports almost always include an analog component to use with VGA adapters. That shouldn't be an issue (but I didn't buy the 1720 mostly because of the lack of DVI).
I don't want liquid cooling as it brings with it a bunch of issues I don't want to mess with. -
This is one of the ugliest laptops I have ever seen.
-
Well, if none of you buy it, and m1330 sales continue to cripple supply they will surely listen.
Dell might not know design, but they know numbers. -
water cooling in a lappie? ZOMG! (pees on your pants) -
I believe the design team on this one are all legally blind.
-
edit: new pics
-
I heard this thing has a 230W power Supply?!?!?! My current inspiron 9100 has a 150W one and its a BRICK! I can't imagine how big this new sucker will be...can anyone confirm this?
