I'm glad the pictured helped you!
In the pictures the texture looks indeed a bit rough, however from a distance the surface just looks flat. The shield is glossy, however it is less glossy than the SXPS 16 is from it's self. Just looking from a distance it is just as if there is no protection shield on the laptop, no ugly rough surface or a plastic look. But the best thing: NO FINGERPRINTS! :D

I made another pic so you can see how it looks from a distance.

Well I finally decided to pick this up and give it a try after seeing the nice results here. I just hope I have the patience to put this one.

I'm sure you made the right choice, just make sure you use the spray enough (spray on both sides so the sqeezie is easy to use)
Ohw and I did the installation in the bathroom, to prevent it from dust.

After seeing those pics, I surely want to get one.. I am scared to death of scratching my lappy so this should help :)
I have a scratch guard that a sponsor in a tech competition gave me last year but I don't want to apply that cause it says something on it which will cover up the Dell logo.. and plus, it won't cover the edges and isn't really made for this form factor.

I'd rather pay the 40 usd to get this thing..
What's the best coupon so far to order? Where can I get the best deal for the invisiblesheild?

As of right now (05/28/09 @ 10AM EST US) the code "MEMDAY09" still works for 50% off. It would be in your best interest to jump on it, since the code was supposed to expire yesterday, and probably will once the new coupon code is posted.

50% doesn't come along very often, but ZAGG does put out coupon codes semi-daily ( via Twitter), ranging on average from 20% to 35%.

You can always use the code "PROTECT20" for 20% off.

Once I get some issues with my machine sorted out I will get it installed and check temperatures between stock and protected.

why would a protective film add heat to the system?

I doubt the covering on the LCD will do anything but the cover on the palm rest could affect heat dissapation. The palm rest itself is a good thermal conductor so it will effectively tranfer heat out of the machine to either be removed via convection or conduction to the user. Since plastic is an insulator it will decrease the the amount of heat that can be dissapated through the palm rest. The real question is how much of the overall system heat is dissapated through the palm rest and if this thin film affects the temps. I doubt it will have much of an effect but I will try to get some measurements.

Uhh...the palmrest itself is plastic already. Wouldn't that by nature already make it a bad conductor? A 1mm thick sheet of plastic over a big hunk of plastic isn't going to make it dissipate less heat than it already would have...

I thought the palm rest was metal or at least that is was I remember from when the tech took it apart. It does seem to get pretty warm on my machine so I figured it was metal. But if it is plastic already I would tend to think a thin piece of plastic won't make much of a difference.

I applied my shield yesterday. And I have to say, it was one heck of a job. I messed up the shield several times, so now my shield is kinda stretch over the edges. There are still some bubbles, I'm gonna have to wait to see if they are going to disappear or not. @_@

im now in the process of asking zagg for full refund of my $23 for an invisible shield of dell studio 16.
there is a reason zagg shields for laptops are not sold on ebay--they dont work on large surface like laptops.

I also had no luck with the shield. All I was concerned about was the palm rest...took several attempts to get even close to fitting right...and then I couldn't stop the water and air from trapping under the Intel and Vista stickers. Useless in my opinion, and a bit dangerous too with all the water you have to use. Anybody know of a better product?

    Here's one: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/DELL-XPS-13-1340-Series-Laptop-SGP-Wrist-Rest_W0QQitemZ370203739661QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5631dcc60d&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262&_trkparms=|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A30

I found this palm wrest cover - it's for 1340 though, they probably stock ones for 1640 too. They also stock top cover skins too - absolutely love the carbon fibre top skin and the leather wrist pad cover. Ordering some for my 1340 right this moment! SGP Corp is a great brand too. Got a couple of skins for my iPhone and they fit perfectly and protect it very well.

No worries mate. I just purchased the "leather" palm/wrist rest cover as well as the carbon fibre top skin. Hopefully arrives in a decent amount of time - should be getting my 1340 iwthin the next 2-3 days. :) Will let everyone know how the fit and finish is and how well it protects my laptop.

don't know if anyone has tried, but how easy would it be to take these off; i.e if you need to return it, or if you don't install it properly, or if there are residual bubbles, or for whatever reason. Does it come off easy, does it leave any marks? I just don't want to get it, fumble the installation, and be left with an ugly sxps :)

Although I must say it sounds like it solves the fingerprint problem very nicely and (provided you do the installation properly) comes out looking just as nice :)

Huey, thanks for that link, i love the carbon look, if only they made it for the sxps 16!! I checked e-bay and the sgpstore.com, no luck

    Thanks

Just got mine installed tonight and I did a better job than expected. I usually have no patience for things like these but it came out OK. Some how I did manage to get a dog hair stuck to the film and I have a few bubbles but nothing too bad. Now the hard part is not using the machine for a while.

OK...sent a request in to Zagg about this but does anyone have any tips on how to get the edges to stay down? Seems like they are not sticky enough to stay stuck and I am afraid they will be sticky enough to attract dirt. Seems to be the worst on the palmrest...I think it is because teh level of the palmrest to the metal frame is not 100% level. So the little air gap causes issues.

Wow don't know if I will be able to fix the issue I am having but Zagg customer support is great. Certainly would consider buying from them again without reservation.

Oh and temps are pretty much the same as before...they are within the same range as before but one difference is the palmrest does feel a little cooler.

    That's really sexy.

The invisibleSHIELD isn't working out as much as I'd like. I installed it just fine, but it's still a fingerprint magnet, and even harder to wipe clean than with its original high-gloss finish. Sure, it protects the laptop, but I'm contemplating removing it to preserve the sleek look. If I had a prettier solution like yours, I'd probably jump on it.

Well you could give the seller a message to ask if they stock any for the 1640. My friend has an M1330 and there aren't any carbon fibre skins for the M1330 listed on the eBay seller's page nor the SGP Corp website, but he messaged the seller and they told him that they do have M1330 carbon fibre skins. So you never know, you may be in luck ;)

I got the invisibleshield and find it impossible to install clean, especially the edges of the lid.

Any luck getting a response about the SXPS16? I've emailed SGP and no response. The carbon and leather looks pretty nice.

Nice - Good to see the SXPS16 bigger brother (or sister, whatever you wanna refer to it as), getting some SGP skins love too ;) Trust me, you won't be disappointed. I've had mine on for a couple weeks now and the top skins is still holding strong with no markings and the palm rest is also in perfect condition.

Well, I don't have this one, but I have one on my Ipod. The only time it boiled was when I took it into a sauna, set it on the wood, and then accidentally say on it. Other than that, it's held up in the MN summer and winter quite handily.
