I'm configuring an XPS 15 and wondering if it's better to get Dell to do it or just get 4 GB and add another 4 GB myself.
So does the system ship with 1 4GB chip or 2x 2 GB RAMs.
Also how tricky is it to change the ram on this system ... i.e. is it easily accessible.

Smart money says you'll be looking at 2 2GB RAM sticks.
If you do decide to upgrade the RAM yourself and want to deal with a minimum of spare parts, upgrade to 6GB RAM (which will use 1 4GB and 1 2GB RAM stick) and just sell the leftovers. Yes, it leaves spare parts, but it would blow my mind if they used a single 4GB RAM stick. And it's probably very easily serviceable. A door on the underside with a screw or two. Easily just a few minutes' work. -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
I actually wouldn't be that surprised if it came with 1 x 4GB. The price of a single 4GB DIMM is approaching that of 2 x 2GB for DDR3... if you're an OEM with a lot of buying power, you might be able to get a better deal on the former.
I've bought a couple laptops with 2GB DDR3 over the past couple years... early on it was common to get 2 x 1GB, but as DDR3 prices keep dropping, I've actually had a couple 2GB configurations ship with 1 x 2GB... so you never know.
Even if not now, probably sooner rather than later. -
This question has been asked a few times before, and everybody with a XPS 15 that responded said they had 2x2. That's the way it should be really. I don't think most people buy a laptop with the intention to upgrade the RAM themselves. If Dell sold their laptops with a single 4gb stick, their customers' laptop would only be running at half RAM speed, and lots would likely complain.

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Sometimes on Dell's site you can opt for a single 4 GB stick for additional money, though 4 GB sticks have come to around 45-50 where as 2 x 2 GB kits are like sub 40 dollars.
Is 4GB ram on XPS 15 1x4 or 2x2
