As the title says... I am really concerned, having read everything about cooling on here. It starts at about 72 degrees, then goes up to ~96 degrees when I have a game open, such as Eve Online.

Is this OK, or do i have a case to contact Dell and get them to look at it? It's 10 months old.

    Thanks!

First off, have you cleaned your fan and vents recently? If not, that may be your problem.

You are waaaaaay to close to the thermal limit of the 8600
A little hotter and it can get permanently damaged

I suggest you try cleaning your vents using compressed air, and if the are still high, contact dell ASAP
    These are seriously high temps

PS - What are your idle temps

    Idle temps are

    CPUs: ~50
    GPU: ~60

Have cleaned the fan, need to clean out the vents. There's a guide in here somewhere I believe...

    Please clean out the vents..

My non-Artic silvered all stock computer's CPU gets to 60C at full orthos load.
My GPU idles at the same temps though.. :p

I will do, but can't see any guides specific to the XPS M1530 for taking it apart. By the vents, I assume you mean the copper tubes?

I assume just undoing the visible screws in the appropriate places will do the trick?

    Over 85C is serious trouble.
Clean out the vents and raise the back of the laptop, undervolt the CPU and make sure you don`t keep it on a fabric or block the vents.

I would take off your bottom cover and make sure the heat sink assembly is firmly attached.

I had a screw down post for the heat pipe assembly pop off the motherboard. This resulted in poor contact and thermal shutdown every time I tried to play a video game.

Dell sent a technician out and replaced the motherboard, which fixed the problem.

Will do, I have cleaned what I can without a can of air, which I will get tomorrow. The laptop is always raised on a stand, with the vents clear, and I had also put some extra holes in the stand, below the underside vent, to provide extra airflow.

If this doesn't work, what is the best way of getting in touch with Dell to report this?

Dell chat is pathetic. They know less than you.

Anyway, the air vents are the outside vents that the fan blows out of. Try to check the WHOLE cooling system. Is the fan spinning (at all) ok? Is the copper pipe damaged? Does the pipe make contact with the GPU in the first place? If everything is good, buy some Arctic Silver 5 and put it on, ESPECIALLY if the GPU has a thermal pad on it. If you're the adventureous/skilled type, try doing a copper mod. Great guide by sinstoic here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=268081.

Also, if nothing appears to be wrong, try calling Dell. Was the 8600 part of those faulty Nvidia GPUs?

Also, you can try downloading the latest BIOS from Dell's site ( http://support.dell.com/support/dow...stemID=XPS_M1530&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid=). If you use it on your desk a lot, you can buy a notebook cooler.

Good luck with my 8 suggestions. The M1530 service manual can be found here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xpsM1530/en/SM/index.htm

hey bug, seems i came in too late, these guys have already told you all the best tips :D

and whooo!!! a fellow EVE online player, cheers mate !

oh and if you are still having heat problems after cleaning vents, tightening screws, putting in AS5, ( high temps meaning above 85C) then i suggest you contact dell through the phone or chat, witchever suits you best, and tell them your laptop is overheating and almost reaching 100C! they should agree to replace motherboard and heatsink :D

Just a follow up. After getting ripped off on a can of compressed air (£8!!! but i had no choice if I wanted it at the weekend), and clearing the vents, the GPU is now max'ing at 75 degrees C.

Unbelievable it can make so much difference, not that much dust was even cleared out :)

A blocked vent or two can make all the differnce in the world :)

So does new thermal paste (if applied correctly) but not recommended if still under warranty, except vial Dell. (Mine's nearly endied so I changed it for an extra 5C drop in temps~)
