In the past 2 years, Dell quality control has been just awful. On top of the Studios XPS 16 fiascos, I ordered three different computers: two SXPS 16s and one Studio 17 and all had to go back to Dell for RMAs. Great concepts; terrible execution. The reviews of the SB models sound great, but reviewers never have to live with them for more than a day or two.

Has anyone taken delivery of really any recent high end Dells and found they performed well out of the box, and stayed that way? If service is needed, is their tech support any better than the awful way it was for the past 2 years.

Put better, is it safe to buy Dell again? They clearly have the best product around if you want a high end notebook, but does has anyone had experienced their build quality, performance (especially with heat) and tech support to say they deserve to go off the "avoid like the plague" list?

XPS 17 build quality is far superior to the SXPS series. The heat is very well managed and the exhaust actually works this time.

All in all a much better laptop :)

Dell's quality control can always use improvement, as with any company can. Not one is perfect.

Safe to buy a Dell now? Why not. If you have an issue you quality control, etc...deal with it accordingly.

Every issue I have had with my Lappy, I have had resolved in one way or another. None of it was 100% easy..but it got resolved.

That and you bought the wrong Dell's. Unfortunately the XPS track record speaks for itself. The Studio line now eliminated, had its hinge issues, though upgrading was a cinch. People's Studios would literally bust apart, even ones that were desktop replacements. I hope that doesn't happen to my dad's Studio 1558, one of the last few Studios before they axed the entire line.

Look to Dell business, you won't be disappointed (only with the newest models).
