I'm asking because I'm looking to purchase one used, but am afraid it'll die on me as its out of warranty now.

    Thanks in advance.

Only the ones with Nvidia cards overheat and die overtime.

If you have the integrated x3100 then its fine.

All laptops in the market with either an 8400M or 8600M are defective. It's just a matter of when it'll die. Some people may be lucky and not see any failure at all.

The M1330 with Intel X3100 is less likely to fail compared to those with the 8400M. Also, you need to take into the account it's price since it is out of warranty.

so even the m1330 with an x3100 is still vulnerable to this? i thought it was a manufacturing defect on the part of NVIDIA

Any gpu can fail. The Nvidia ones are just more prone because of the bad materials.

Alright, so basically the m1330s with the x3100 are not likely to fail than any other laptop?

The m1330's with x3100 are not flawed or defective in any way. It will live just as long as other non defective notebooks.

Its just the Nvidia cards that overheated and failed overtime.

does it still make sense to get one brand new from dell with the new xps 13 out?

    the m1330 starts at 999, xps13 at 1299 on dell.ca

Just save up for the newer model and skip the nvidia headache. The m1330 is quite outdated.

Why keep up with Joe Blogs? If the M1330 meets your needs and saves you a few bucks go for it.
Even the brand new XPS 13 are giving problems.
M1330 with Nvidia or Intel the choice is yours for a good laptop.

Thanks for the advice. I am leaning towards getting an m1330, because A) its not super new so most issues with it have been brought to light b) its cheaper and c) it suits my needs enough.

dell.ca has a no interest for 6 months offer for xps at the moment. not familiar with financing through them, is it as simple as this:
    - if you pay off the entire amount before 6 months, you're not paying any interest at all?

    thanks

well i have 2 M1330's with the nVidia chipsets. No issues wwith both...but i have to admit i did the copper shim mod on the heatsinks to get rid of the thermal pads
it 100% did reduce my temps on the machines
Also have a Studio XPS 13....now that runs hot i tell you
feels like it'll burn my frikkin leg
