I've read a lot of mixed reviews on this display. Some people say it doesn't even produce accurate colors. Does anyone think its worth the extra money?

unless you want absolutely vibrant and correct color for photo editing professionally, then yes. If just gaming and photo viewing and some minor editing, then no.
-
I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions, but I couldn't justify the price to myself.
If 1080p doesn't make that significant of a difference on a 40" display, I can't see how it (or an RGBLED vs. WLED) will on a 16" display. -
I love it. Never seen a WLED on the SXPS since I got mine when RGBLED was a must for 1080p.

I ordered one but I'm not sure I'll be "WOWed"...
I'll wait and wait and wait and wait and ... cancel / re order ... and wait and see! (cf XPS 1645 fiasco)

The problem with this display it thats it needs to be calibrated, we're working it at the moment (i doubt that dell will do it) :

It is an amazing display though ! -
The RGBLED needs to be calibrated. Calibration doesn't apply to movie players, so if you like to watch movies with accurate colors you should NOT go for the RGBLED. (however I've found a satisfactory, but not perfect solution to that problem).
With that said, images are perfect when calibrated, so if you work a lot in Photoshop or Lightroom etc. this is a very good display. -
Calibration works perfectly using MPC-HC on Windows 7.

Would you mind sharing your ICC profile created by MPC-HC, iaTa?

All the no votes are people who don't have it...

absolutely sure......(brighter & more vivid screen technology)
SEC5448 its the best laptop screen on the market without any doubts -

I'd personally been a sceptic when it came to using an RGB LED screen. My previous lappy was an HP and it did great for me with regards to resolution, clarity, color, etc. Once I got my Dell with the RGB screen, I finally SAW what everyone was raving about and I DID notice the difference when i set the two lappy's side by side. I got the RGB screen for CADD and Photoshop work, but it became an instant bonus for movies and anything else that relied on accurate colors. once you get the ICC Profile straight, this screen won't disappoint.

"I got it and love it" is no more or less valid than "I couldn't justify the price to myself" if neither person has seen the two next to each other. -
As I see it (no pun intended), The RGB LED screen produces more vibrant and sharper images, the color accuracy is much better in terms of not muting the color any, even if you run the same ICC profile on a non-RGB LED screen. I doubt seriously that this is all a gimic and from my experiences working with LCD screens over many years, this screen I have now is the cleanest, clearest and brightest I have ever used. Yes, this is all my opinion and many CAN disagree if they choose to. The original poster asked the question and there are many responses...it is up to the poster to decide still. -
I'm a college kid, and I don't use my computer for too much crazy stuff, gaming, videos, CAD, some photo-editing. Its really nothing too major. I'm sure I could get by with the normal screen. The only two options when I ordered mine was the RGBLED 1080p and the normal 768 screen. However, everyone that sees this one thinks its incredible. A friend of mine said that after using this, that their computer looked like a kiddie computer. The screen is one of the most used features of a computer...since you do look at it every time you use the laptop. Don't "cheap out" on the most used feature of a computer.
Just my thoughts
Also, to justify the price...consider how long you will keep this computer, and consider the number of hours you will use it. The price bump for the RGB will account for less than 8% of the cost, and furthermore it will only be pennies for every day that you use the computer. Compare that to buying cable TV for example where its almost a dollar a day. Its definitely worth it -

from what I've seen, most people who have the RGBLED seem pretty happy with it, and so do most of the people who just got the WLED. There are a few of each who wish they had/had not spent the money. That doesn't mean any of them are wrong. -
I might've gotten the RGBLED if I could afford it. I haven't seen it personally, but I'm using WLED 720p, and the color is fantastic, images are sharp, and a big step up from my hp dv5000 screen. (and brighter, too)
but I've seen some threads about how you have to deal with calibration on the RGBLEDs?
Like many have noted, is RGBLED worth a couple hundred of dollars more???
Is RGBLED LCD display worth it?
