I'll be heading into college this fall. My computer uses are:

    -Web communication
    -Homework/word-processing
    -Photoshop

I've been debating between getting a lighter/longer-battery-life computer like the Studio 14z, since that could probably handle my uses. HOWEVER, if I know I won't be in the market for a new computer for another 3-4 years, the SXPS seems like it will provide me with more longevity given the DDR3 RAM and a 512 graphics card.

Thoughts? Will the Studio XPS 16 still be portable ENOUGH for student use?

If your looking at the 14Z and/or the SXPS 1640 the best thing to do would be to fill out the What Should I Buy FORM

When complete, paste it into a thread here: What Notebook Should I Buy?

The form above gives some very descriptive questions, that are very helpful in peep's providing you with suggestions, etc :D

If you're living on residence and you're there to study and party occasionally, then you probably won't need a super high end laptop, if anything it'd be a waste of money. An under $1000 laptop would suffice as I ended first year in April and now heading to second year. I used my laptop more as a replacement and when I did carry it around, I didn't use it much at all. Save a few extra bucks for textbooks I'd say.
