If you talking about general upgrades, then yes. The hard disk, RAM and processor can be replaced. However, the processor cannot be upgraded to something the chipset doesn't support, like the upcoming 800 MHz FSB Merom processors. Anyway, that notebook, when confugured well, will last a long time.

If you still feel that it isn't future proofed, then you can wait a couple months for Santa Rosa to come out. The performance increase won't be all that much, but it will be the newest package from Intel, and that may be more upgradeable in the future.

if you are talking about the new santa rosa chipset and new processor, the chances are slim to none. Also there will be NO DX10 compliant card for the M1710

Yes, the Core 2 Duo T7200 will last quite a while. It is a very capable and powerful processor. In terms of a graphics card upgrade, it is probably something that may or may not happen. At the moment, it can be bought with either the Go 7900 GS or Go 7950 GTX. So, you can upgrade between them, but it is very expensive, and somewhat pointless, as you should get the chioce right when buying the notebook.

DX10 cards that Dell wants to put into a notebook of this size, will probably be high end Go 8800, when they eventually release. Now, for them to offer it in this notebook, seems difficult. You have to consider the thermal and power constraints. The same is true for a number of other manufacturers.

Optical Drives that are in built are practically all the same form factor, so I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to install one afterwards.

Games will load a little faster with the 7200 rpm drive, however actual gameplay will be the same for either drive.

100GB 7200RPM; but the difference is not significant
