Ive been thinking of installing XP on my 1530 laptop. If I do, Id leave Vista too for daily use (and XP for games)... is this a good idea or not worth it? Ive heard some people have perfromance issues on XP, and Im mainly doing this to get better performance. Im playing games up to the level of Crysis. TIA!

I believe XP on my m1330 would fly, but I have decided to go Vista for learning purposes.

If you do not need to "learn" the OS, do a clean install of XP (single boot) and you will be better off. ;)

    YES! FTW!!! :D :D :D

EDIT: Spam aside, the general sentiment is that XP still does provide a faster gaming experience than Vista, even with all the DX10 stuff going on. I don't know if all the 1530 XP driver issues have been worked out yet, but if they have there isn't any reason not to try getting an XP installation worked out. If you wanted to do things the "right" way, you could just as well do the dual boot as see which OS actually DOES give you better performance at your desired settings and simply wipe the other partition when you see fit.

How does dual boot work? do you have to choose which os you want to boot from every time you turn on the laptop? Can anyone else add from their experience if performance increased? thanks!

Do a google search for xp vista dual boot. You'll find all the info you can possibly need, to include how the boot loader works.

I much prefer Vista myself too. So much that since my Eee PC won't run it the way I want it to, I've got my Eee XP installation to look like Vista. :D

What about for those of us that don't do any gaming? (gasp! ;))

Are we better off with XP or Vista?

With a tweaked fresh vista install I find it to be about the same speed as XP. The only time I could ever say its slower (hardly noticable at that) is with aero enabled.

I'm willing to bet that if everyone who has vista and likes it was as vocal as those who don't, this board would be full of "vista is cool" spam...

Most of the people I know who hate vista hate it because 1) they're afraid of change, 2) they are 'nerds' (I use the term loosely, as I consider myself one...) who like to have full control over their systems, or 3) they've had one 'issue' with vista, and have sworn never to go back, no matter how small or insignificant that issue was.

I'm on XP now, but I'll say that vista 'feels' better to me (being a Mac user). Ubuntu is also nice, but that's for the real nerd in me.

If nothing doesn't work in vista, why not use it? It won't be long before microsoft starts to support for xp, and then you'll truly have no idea what's going on when you have to go with vista.

I think there's valid arguments for both Vista or XP. There's only 2 factors you should consider, do you have all the drivers you need for Vista and does all your software work with Vista.

If you can answer yes to both questions, then you are free to use either OS.

If i'd want do to a dual boot with vista/xp... is the only thing i have to do: decrease the size of C:/ and make another partition and install xp on that one? or do i have to go intio BIOS and change any "boot settings"?

The notion that Vista is slower than XP in games is outdated. Newer drivers and SP1 have improved Vista's gaming performance to XP levels and in some cases beyond XP levels.

Microsoft is going to completely end support for XP soon as they try to push people on to Vista. The gaming performance difference now is negligible, if noticeable at all.

Quit quoting that extremetech article. There is no mention of driver versions, etc.... And so far, that is the only site that I have seen a benchmark that has Vista "on par" with gaming performance of XP. I have done my own tests, making sure I use same drivers between XP and Vista. And found that Vista Sp1 in gaming would eat about 10% in games.

And MS will be supporting XP till at least Windows 7 comes out.

Aaaawww....but thats Vista gaming fan's "holy grail" that one article

Personally the sluggish general windows performance annoys me more than the loss in games FPS performance.I'll keep using XP until software and driver support dies, just like with W2k.

I also highly doubt XP support will be dropped for a long long time, especially after reading the latest berstein IT survey result that estimate's vista's business usage will be 26% by 2011.....yeah....businesses are really going to be forced into upgrading in the next few months.....plus,MS has eaten their hats numerous times since taking the initial hard line on "vista is here now,XP is gone" ...they're getting to the stage now where they're giving away free copies of vista with XP and calling it "downgrade rights"....even with the official end of consumer XP sales you can now order an XPS M1730 with "downgrade rights" LOL

To answer the OP,if I had a M1530 it would have XP on it,for both games and general usage....wouldn't even bother dual booting.....get yourself a nice skin if looks are important, enjoy your new speed and extra hard drive space

i dualboot vista 64 / XP. i have all the aero interface turned on, have a Dream scene ( a animated desktop) running 24/7 and have all the 3d enhancements on. it runs exactly the same as XP when browsing windows surfing the net etc.

when it comes to older games, such as Audition or when i play games like Gunbound or Soldier front, XP runs faster and smoother (running as a single card system, meaning i also remove SLi stutter which would otherwise compound problems). additionally, running Vista in 64 bit means that some programs just fail to run outright, those i also use under Win XP.

for anything that uses DX 10 or any taxing games that require both of my cards, i run it under Vista 64. thus i save the need to constantly change all my SLi settings ( which for some reason always causes my system to crash), and i'm always using the most stable platform for whatever i'm running.

thats from personal experience though, i've been dual booting for about 3 weeks, and i love vista, but some games just run better under XP, why choose one or the other when you can have your cake -and- eat it? =P

thats based on my experience though, depending on what games etc you play, you may find that XP suits you just fine (if you for instance don't have a card that will run games in DX10 very well), or you may find that you notice no performance difference playing in Vista (thus you'd have little reason to use XP), only way to find out is to test it really.. both O.S's have different high points and low points, just find out what works best for you.
