Hey guys, I just received my new XPS 1645 and I was wondering if a laptop cooling pad was needed if I have the 9-cell battery since it raised the back of the laptop about an inch. Thanks.

Yes, I would get one. Every little bit helps. I use it when I'm at my desk.

I don't use my cooling pad when I'm at a desk, but when I'm on my bed or the sofa I use the Zalman. Although I do have to put a sheet of card under the cooler to stop the bed from engulfing the fan - a bit of a design fault for most coolers!

I'll be dishing out some cash for the NC-2500 Plus when that comes out as the vertical fans look to have solved that problem!

If you feel like it gets too warm for you then sure get a cooling pad, it only brings positive benefits. I bought mine purely for longevity reasons.

Yea, I would still recommend one. I don't ever use my laptop on my lap, so my cooling pad and laptop are always on a table.

The cooling pad I use is the Logitech Notebook Cooling Pad (N100), I've had it for over a year, and it still functions properly. It is usb-powered (I also have usb port extenders). I don't think the small lift of the 9-cell helps -that- much, and a cooling pad has definitely helped dissipate the heat.
My temps overall are like 115-120 degrees F with the cooling pad and 9-cell in an ambient temperature of about 77 degrees F.

You need cooling pad if you do any computationally intensive stuff like gaming, photoshop, graphics programming etc. For normal usage the temps are pretty normal. I mostly use my laptop for browsing (40-50%), college work (30-35%) and the rest gaming. From my experience(1645) you cannot game on your lap even the small games like battlefield heros cannot be played on lap.

ON a side Note which of the following Coolers do you guys prefer for XPS 1645:

    Zalman 1000
    Logitech NC100
    Belkin
    Microsoft Notebook Cooler

To be fair ANY laptop with a discreet GPU will get hot on your lap if you game... And how can you play anything like an FPS while on your lap?

As for the cooler, I've raided in wow for 6 straight hours with zero issues and no pad with the 9 cell. Being on a desk you will be fine without one. However my laptop is not my main computer for gaming and if it was and was going to stay on my desk I'd get a cooling pad to save on the wear and tear from the heat just to be safe.

offtopic i know, But did your 1645 come with A10 or did you update? A09 is better it doesn't have the imposed thermal limits as a10

    i agree with l8mkbee.

No need if we only do basic computation like browsing/documentation/watching movies, etc.

But for gaming it is a must.
