Is an XPS M1530 successor expected any time soon?

I'm probably going to buy an XPS M1530 in the next couple of months, but will I be ripped off if the M1540 (?) comes out in a similar timeframe? Do you think I should go for it or should I wait for the next model?

Also, as the laptop has been out quite a while now, are the grainy, dim screens still an issue? I know that on my Inspiron 640m I got the worst type of panel... after less than 2 years the backlight has stopped working completely and now I'm using an external monitor.

Highly unlikely since the XPS M1530 came out less than 6 months ago. The XPS 1330's been out about a year and no replacement for it has been announced either.

Thanks for clearing up that. Can anyone give an answer for the grainy screens Q, please? If it helps, I'd most likely choose the 1440x900.

i'd wait a bit since Dell seem to be sorting out the screen options. They've added 1920x1200, and are apparently going to add 1440x900 LED and eventually the others will be LED too...

also rumour has it the next one will be the 16" 1630.

Yes 1400x900 will most likely give u a good LG screen, but don't jump to joy yet..there are cases where 1400x900 are samsung screens :(

Just received an XPS M1530 the other day with a 1680 x 1050 LG screen, so it appears that Samsung's are not being used exclusively.

I don't think Dell ever used Samsung screens EXCLUSIVELY. That's why it was a bit of a gamble when you buy the XPS. You could get the LG or Samsung and at different times there appeared to be more of one panel or the other used.

They already have the LED option for 1440x900.

And yes, I think it might be possible for Dell to release the 16" XPS shown at CES 2008. Here's the NBR article on it.

The only reason that I can think of why Dell wouldn't release this laptop is because it's very similar in size to the m1530 although it's a 16:9 rather than a 16:10 screen.

Yeah it would be very similar to the 1530 in size, maybe it will replace the 1530 in the future. Unless it would have something special, I would just get a 1530 now.

1920x1080 resolution is way to high in my opinion, that is pointless. You better get an HD TV or an external monitor if you want to enjoy High Definition.
That said, 16" would be perfect for 1440x900 resolution. Has there been any possible release date announced yet ?

Acer released a 16" 16:9 notebook recently. (and also a 18"). And I believe I read that screen manufacturers were anticipating an increase in demand for these screens from various manufacturers, especially over the next year or two as blu-ray becomes more of a 'standard' feature.

I can see Dell releasing a 16" XPS for sure. Maybe not short term, but that (16:9) definitely seems to be where media-oriented laptops will go in the future.

As for upgrades to the M1530, only a fool would bet against a montineva revamp in the next few months. But as with all things in the computer world, there is no point in waiting, as there is always something else around the corner. Just buy when you need to.

Yes, I assume we all agree with that but it is way more important to be sure about the screen's size we need than the performance of the laptop in general since, just like you said, it is in perpetual evolution.
16" seems to be the best compromise for me.

I thinkthe M1330 will be replaced soon , in Japan Dell is discounting it a lot more than other models, but the M1530 is not at all discounted.

I also checked Dell US site, but it is not much discounted.

I hope the M1330 get WSXGA+ screen in June with the Montevina coming, then it would be my dream computer.

Oh of course not, all I was trying to say is that you can still get an LG screen. :)

dunno maybe with a few extra inches the components would change...

i mean, there was the whole "we can't fit a 8600 in the 1330 but we can in the 1530" thing...

    come on 9800 GT 512MB!!

    (single not SLi, MONTEVINA)

    yeah. that's my dream.

(which is in no way related to anything they said about the concept model they showed off that only had a 8600)
