Hi! I`m buying a neat M1330 laptop next month, yet the particular unit comes with pre-installed Vista Home Basic. So I wonder is it OK to swap OS on Dell laptop systems, since it could make some crucial software disappear which is not possible to download anywhere?

What do you want to switch it with??? Linux or something like that?

You have quiet a few options if you wanna play it safe, one being dual boot... else you could try virtual pc or vmware for the other OS..

As for losing some crucial software, I dont know if you have anything crucial as such thats needed for normal functioning of the laptop.. probably you'd lose stuff like the recovery option or the dell support stuff or the media center... but then if you are chosing a diferent OS, I think you might be able to find complementary version' of the same... and probably voiding the warranty in some way, I am not sure (I'll leave it for the experts)

You might want to search around here on NBR for user views.. there are quiet a few threads here..

And yes, it would be nice if you could specify what you want to switch to.. that way people can get you more precise information :)

    Thanks and cheers.

It could be either XP Pro or Vista Ultimate, i haven`t decided yet. And i rather don`t want to loose some cool features, as i did on my previous laptop (Quickpaly on HP).

well if you are sticking within windows but a different version, I suggest you take a look in the dell vista laptop reformat / bloatware removal guide from Les, a wonderful sticky :) :)

Also, upgrading from Home basic to ultimate and such would be fairly straight forward if you have a disc for your wanted version... I dont think you would be losing anything...

For XP, you might want to read through the threads here.. because driver version' would differ.. so you would need XP compatible drivers (again you can find this from UDI who has made a wonderful thread)

Otherwise, I dont see you losing anything crucial or anything you would want to keep...

Else, just do an upgrade to vista ult., and check out les' awesome guide on the vista tips n tweaks.. and other threads too...

else if you are sure on XP Pro, check out the driver requirements mainly.. and probably some software compatibility (thought I havent seen many major issues on that front around here)...
