XPS 1640, T9600, 4GB DDR3, running Windows 7 x86.
I've installed the latest Drivers, as mentioned in a couple of Threads here
Got the volts down, stable, from 1.1750 to 1.1000 for the 10.0x with RMClock, not tried it any lower, nor have I messed with the other multipliers.
Fraps gives me a reading of single digits and game play is very lagged as soon as I go further than the initial cinematic; to the point that shooting and driving games are unplayable. I've tried Drakensang, NFS Shift, Poker Simulator and Wolfenstein in various flavors of performance setups and various resolutions, all with similar results.
Apart from that the computer looks to be performing without a hitch.
How do I test to locate the problem, any help?
-
Have you tried monitoring your temperatures using HWmonitor or another program(assuming there is a noticeable increase in temperature to the touch)? Perhaps your GPU hits the higher temperature threshold and throttles or downclocks.
-
You either got a dud or you have some settings wrong in ATI Catalyst Control Center. Are you sure you don't have all the aliasing/texture settings set up to the max? This will make some games stutter. Make sure in ATI you are using program settings, not your own. See if that helps. If not, I'd send it back for a replacement.
That, or its the Windows 7 client. Do you have these problems on Vista? -
Seems obvious, but be sure you arent in Power Saver mode.
-
Been using HWMonitor to monitor CPU temperatures during undervolting exercise, it won't monitor my GPU, only ACPI, CPU and HDD. EVEREST reports the DispIO and MemIO values of my GPU as 50 Celsius or less, when idle, and around the 56 to 60 Celsius mark when running Wolfenstein in Window Mode (Trying this for the 1st time), saying that, in Window Mode I'm getting an average value of 35 in Fraps.
That's what I need to rule out, whether it is a DUD, hoping not.
In the Catalyst Control Center:
Display Options -
'Changed to Detect whenever Catalyst Control Center is opened.'
PowerPlay -
Changed to 'Maximize Performance' for 'Plugged In:'
The rest is default, and I get around 25 in Fraps back on Full Screen, so still not ideal
.
Only briefly tried any gaming when running with original install of Vista, and it was lagged then, but as I didn't have Fraps, can't comment on values.
Under Control Panel, Power Plan, it's set to Balanced, if that's what you mean? -
Try setting the Power Plan to High Performance.
-
Only have the option of 'Balanced' or 'Power saver', and under that; to 'Dim the display', 'Turn off the display', 'Put the computer to sleep' and 'Adjust plan brightness' options, so no High Performance option, and it's already set to ''Maximize Performance' under the Catalyst Control Center. Starting to think this may infant be a DUD.
-
What kind of numbers are you getting when running 3DMark06?
-
There should be a 'High Performance' setting. Try clicking on "Control panel--> Power options" and see if it is in there. If not, create a new one and make it a High Performance setting.
Also, which graphics card do you have? The 4670? -
6392 3DMarks
SM2.0 Score: 2369
HDR/SM3.0 2859
CPU Score: 2275
ThumbsUp, found it under 'additional plans', now set to 'High performance'.
Yep, 4670.
Still only getting a Fraps value of 20 odd in Wolfenstein. -
Those numbers are pretty much on par for the course for this machine. I'd say that the hardware is fine.
-
The 3dmarks are good, so it has to be some setting/support issue with the games you are playing. I suspect Windows 7 to be the reason.
-
When I start 3DMark06, Windows tells me 'The color scheme has been changed to Windows 7 Basic', is that to be expected?
Just ran 3DMark06 again, this time with the resolution set to 1920 x 1080, all tests selected, and to repeat the tests 3x:
5305 3DMarks
SM2.0 Score: 1986
HDR/SM3.0 2215
CPU Score: 2254
... and again, with the same options:
5283 3DMarks
SM2.0 Score: 1982
HDR/SM3.0 2191
CPU Score: 2279
... only thing that's changed from my 1st 3DMark06 of yesterday, is I've applied a new Theme!
Would that be considered a considerable difference, also, as you've got a similar setup to mine, would you mind if I sent you the full test result for you to compare against yours, ... as it's quite a bit to be posting here?
I had similar gaming performance with the OEM install of Vista x64, just didn't get into it, as I was scheduled to reinstall so as to remove the Bloatware, ... in the interim, got Windows 7, so opted for that over Vista again. Is it worth going through the hassle of putting Vista back on and comparing Fraps and 3DMark06 results [Cringe at the thought!]? -
I'm not sure... hard to say what the problem is in your games since you are getting decent 3dmark results. The new results were lower because you increased the resolution probably.
Might try posting this in the 'Hardware' forum and seeing if some else can dissect the problem. -
Yes, Win7 switching to basic theme is to be expected, and normal.
Your 3DMark06 score for 1920x1080 is lower then the 1st run at the default resolution and this is normal of course. Your changing theme has nothing to do with it. The higher the resolution, the lower the score.
Sure, send me the full results and we can compare. No problem. -
OK, thanks.
Nice 1, much appreciated, I'll PM you a little later, on my Desktop at the moment.
Is it my 4670, realy bad performance?
