I heard from many people posting on internet that i7 processor will make your dell laptop very hot. Not sure if they mean old i7 only or including 2nd generation as well. They said this is the reason they picked i5 instead.

Is it true? Can someone who use i7 laptop confirm please.

I have both, the L501x and L502x with the i7 processors and I have noticed no problems with heat. Both idle at about 48 to 52C and may reach 65 to 70C under moderate load but both cool down quickly. It really depends what you are using it for, gaming or surfing.

I also have the I7 processor and its not hot at all either. What an odd reason to get a I5 over an I7.

That's good....because I just ordered i7 2720QM processor. So I was a bit concerned. Just weird to see such reason though.

Depends on the notebook and the cooling system. A 459 Acer with an i5 will run hotter than an 18" Alienware with an i7.

I bought XPS 17 over XPS 15 with i7 with the impression the bigger size will have more room to cool. So far no problem. My friend with the 16 inch old Dell suffer damage motherboard recently probably due to the smaller size casing.

No heat issues with my XPS 15. Highest temps I've seen was while playing Bioshock 2 for a few hours. Speedfan indicated mid to high 60 degree temps. My SXPS16 runs a lot hotter with a T9600 because of the poor cooling design. Maybe they're talking about the 2nd/3rd gen Studio XPS Dells?

About a year ago I had my M6500 running on 100% on all cores for about 3 weeks 24/7 and had no heat problems.
Of course the fans were constantly spinning but the CPU temperature hardly exceeded 70°C.

My gpu on L501x can reach 91 C when running demanding benchmarks, cpu goes up to 75 C but then quickly cools down.

    I've got an i7 processor 1st gen.

Zero problems here either. After a good two hours of gaming on Drit3 and CoD MW2, temps for CPU have not exceeded 68 degrees and for the GPU, not above 70 degrees.
