I heard somewhere on this forum that in a couple of months the new centrino 2 platform will be coming out and as such, a new line of computers will be created, destroying the current XPS line. If this is the case and i purchase one (M1530) and it happens to go bust a year in (when the line will be taken away) i won't be able to get a new replacement will i? I would hope that the laptop would last a good solid 3 years or so and i'm hesitant on buying for because of this problem with no more being made (This is my first laptop) Would i still be able to get a replacement? Will they make a bunch of them for this case after they stop putting them on for sale? i really don't know what to do...

I appreciate your reply but I need the laptop for college and as such, will need a laptop as I'll be moving around a lot. Anyway, I'd appreciate it if anyone would tell me what to do apart from buying a desktop and if it's really a big deal

ok... i'll be serious, the Montevina platform is being released with many laptops this month. if you want a current platform, i would wait.

ETA: how much of a performance difference or lifespan extension it will offer over the current santa rosa platform, i dont know and someone else can answer that. the next generation processor, Nehalem i assume is more important, due out in Q1/2 next year.

wow, it's being released this month? That's excellent. Would the price for many of these increase in price because of this as i only have $1200 (£600) to spend on a laptop with a 8600m gt or more (I'm not a hardcore gamer but i like playing PC games in my spare time when i have nothing to do.) I was thinking of buying the m1530 on the 30th anyway so this news is great. Thanks.

HP already revealed its new line a few days ago with that platform although they aren't on sale yet, Dell is expected to do the same soon. keep in mind these rollouts are slow and depending on what size you had in mind they might come later over the next 3 months. expect to pay a premium at initial release or take advantage of deals on older stock.

if you're on a budget, wait a bit and buy from what's left before they clear out

ETA: now is a pretty good time to pick up a 1530 with that card cheaply if you dont want to wait for Montevina, just scour UK coupons, and there is a little bit of room to haggle if you order on the phone

i'm guessing there would be an increase in the price due to the recent release of the technology..the advantage of buying the new montenevia notebooks is that it will support ddr3, have better gpu's and support for the nehalem processors..however you should keep in mind that it is new technology and small bugs are to be expected.. in short to answer your question, you should wait, when the new platform comes out, santa rosa(the current platform) will become almost obsolete

"Originally scheduled for release this month, the launch of Centrino 2 was pushed back to August because of problems with the regulatory filings required for the antenna used with the chip platform, as well problems with the integrated graphics chipset. The delay is not expected to have a significant impact on Intel or system makers."

hmmm... i need to think about this....

if your on a tight budget and play rarely, you could go for the m1530..the gpu will easily last you a good 3 years..i'm waiting for next month to buy my mbp.

Well yes, that's the thing. I don't play all the time, just casual. And when the GPU comes obsolete then i'll just build a desktop if i'm that eager to play games. The notebook will be good enough for the work and the current games now.. I'm happy with that. But i'm still going to think about it. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated

if you're also on a strict schedule the 1530 isn't a bad choice, you can get the 8600m gt with it and it will last you a bit otherwise, wait

Yes, i do kinda need it as my desktop is slowly giving up the ghost. one last question though please guys, when the new chipset comes out will dell be able to support me and the xps to the standered that they are now? (Which i heard is ok....) Will they be able to replace i if it goes kaboom? (which i'm thinking not,..)

they should, it doesn't go obsolescent that fast. and if you're still under warranty and they happen not to have the part to fix whatever, you might get something better.

excellent. You don't know how much you've helped me! I've been thinking about this for a while now and you have just gave me the incentive to buy it now. I guess all tech gets old at sometime. But on the brightside, i'm still using my desktop now with a pentium 4 3.0ghz, 1 gb of pc-4200 ram and a slow but faithful geforce 6200 LE.. It's still chugging along.. Hope my laptop will be the same. Thanks again Only.

you're welcome and i am glad to help, others i'm sure will fill in any gaps i or the other person may have missed so check back just in case. and i know the feeling as i'm writing to you from something equally resilient. g'luck with your purchase and bear in mind you are purchasing at the end of a cycle, if anything get the longest warranty your budget allows and you will be safe in either getting replacement parts or a new system altogether.

Hi everyone, is it possible to upgrade to a Montevina Nehalem processor (meaning self extraction and change) if you were to purchase a current T8300 Penryn on the XPS M1330?
