Is it worth dusting off my old Dell XPS m1730?

5 or so years ago I purchased a Dell XPS m1730. I'm not sure what XPS notebooks look like now but this thing is ridiculously huge. It has a 17" screen and is over 2 inches thick. The LCD ended up going out after my warranty expired, so I used an external monitor up until the HDD died. I intended on repairing it but I didn't know much about notebooks at the time so it's been collecting dust in my basement.

I recently fired it up and surprisingly everything else seems to be working well. The battery doesn't hold a charge but other than that it should be useable if I replace the HDD and the 17" LCD. I have since then bought an HP envy 15 (2 years ago) & I'm ordering a replacement HDD for it so I was thinking about throwing down for another to get this old giant back up and running. I remember paying nearly 3 grand for it at the time so it seems like a waste to let it die like this if the fix is so simple. Although I know it's very dated, using a core 2 duo so it's not as much of a powerhouse as it was back when I got it. It has 4gb ram which can be easily and cheaply upgraded to 8gb if needed, not to mention it lights up the whole damn room when powered on (seems like a waste of battery, but I can't lie it does look pretty awesome)

I also noticed that you can easily raid 2 HDDs with the laptop as the cable has enough space and connectors to make the process a simple affair. A new battery, HDD, and LCD will probably run me around $300 to get this beast up and running again, is it worth the price? Having a second powerful machine defiantly has its upended so I'm highly considering it!

I wish I knew the specs on your machine. I am restoring my four year old HP HDX 16 for my son. It will play the new star wars mmo and I will let my son use it, so for me it makes sense to restore it. I just recieved my 17" XPS L702X and I love it. I am sure my son will make good use of the old HP. Guess it is just a matter of asking yourself if you have a use for it.
