    Hey guys,

I just got my laptop yesterday in the mail and coincidentally so did a new 7200RPM 320gb hard drive. Now, I was wondering if it is worth it to swap out the drives as I have a 5400RPM 320GB currently in the laptop. Would I notice a considerable difference. I believe that both are Western Digital but the 7200RPM comes with a fall sensor.

The 5400 one that i have inside does make some noise every once in a while that does annoy be a little. I wonder what that is?

    Thanks!

I would definitely do the upgrade if I were you. If you have a desktop with SATA, you can use a program like Acronis Trueimage or Norton Ghost to clone the old drive to the new one even, and then you don't even have to reload Windows or anything.

Also I don't think that is irony.

Now that I look at it, your right it isn't.

Would I be able to sell the old one (5400) one? Or do I have to keep it?

Also, I don't care about the reloading windows because there are too much bloat that comes with it and I did get my x64 cd today so I would reinstall windows. What about the Recovery partition and the Media Direct program?

You would lose the recovery partition unless you clone... but why would you care about it if you're going to reload it yourself anyway? The recovery partition will re-install all that bloat. Media Direct is very easy to re-install, just make sure you put the MD reinstall disc in BEFORE you load Windows. You could sell the 320GB 5400RPM drive, but Dell of course will not warranty the new drive - the manufacturer will have to do that.

So, install MD before installing windows or after it but before windows is loading up?

I can make a new recovery partition after I reload windows right? If so, how?

I do not know anything about making recovery partitions, however Media Direct must be installed PRIOR to Windows.

I recently cloned my hard drive using Arconis 11 - worked perfectly. Downloaded it from new egg for $32.

O-O-C, where did you get the 320GB 7200RPM drive? I'm looking around for one to replace the 160 in mine.

I picked up mine from Buy.com for 97 dollars. It is the Western Digital version with the Free Fall Sensor.

Ya, I think that I got a pretty good deal. But man, deals for these mobile hard drives are dropping like butterflies this past week. Like today, the Hitachi 320gb 7200 RPM is only 69.99 after 30 dollar rebate. That blows my price out of the water!!!!

I stopped by my LCS today to pick up a special order. While I was there I inquired about the 320GB 7200 RPM HDD. They can get it in but then the dude spotted a 500GB 7200 RPM Seagate they can get in for...get this...$109.99(!!). Whoa! 500GB!! 7200RPM!!! He's going to confirm the price for me with their distributor on Monday and if it's true I'm down for one. :)

Wow are you sure its a Seagate 500GB 7200 RPM drive? Afaik Seagate don't produce drives that big.

I don't think that's a laptop drive, laptop size drives aren't readily available in 500gb as far as I know.

Oh yeh that makes sense. My M1330 is coming with a 500gb drive but i seriously doubt that it is 7200RPM. That's too bad.

That would definitely be a ridiculous price if it was the 500GB. What would be called a "slick deal".
