So when I'm at home, I run a dual monitor set up with a 24" Asus as my primary.

I'm an EMT and just got to the station, open up my new L702x and about a half inch from the top of my screen is a line of blue pixels that illuminate as soon as my monitor comes on with my system.

I called dell, and before a tech could even answer the phone, they went away and all is fine.

Weird, but do you guys think this is a isolated incident or is my screen getting close to death?

Matt, care to share your opinion? :)

A whole line of blue pixels typically indicates a bad LCD, but a possible bad motherboard.

I would run a couple rounds of memtest (rules out your RAM), and reinstalling latest Nvidia drivers. Is the line on the internal LCD or external monitor?

Internal, but it went away on it's own and I haven't had the issue return.

My opinion: sounds odd. Could be an LCD issue, but it went away immediately so it is hard to say. It could be that there was some strange pressure on the screen when you opened it up, causing some issues with the top part of the screen that went away after it heated up. But I don't think this is very likely. I'd say keep an eye on it and if it returns again, give Dell another yell. This is what warranties are for :D

    SURPRISE! It's back!

Annoying, yes. But this time my 24" is plugged in and still, it's on my laptop's screen.

I would run memtest and try the latest Nvidia drivers to rule out everything but the motherboard/GPU. Worst case scenario either a bad LCD or motherboard or both.

I've been on the phone with dell for 45 minutes now. It is in fact, a bad panel. It is visible as soon as the system is powered on. The display test (hold "D" and boot up) still showed the horizontal line. I knew this was it when it happened yesterday, I just don't understand why it went away and came back this evening.

Anyways, Dell is coming Friday, Saturday or Monday to swap out the panel.

With my luck, they will bring me a 900P screen.

Your not alone man. I have the same setup and just got a line across my LCD today. Tech is coming out to replace in few days. Good luck with your repairs.

Yea I was told mine could be here as soon as today, saturday, or monday at the latest.

I made it clear I will be working a 24 hour shift from 6am tuesday until 6am wednesday and that I need it fixed before then...

So who knows, she seemed to stress that saturday would be the day.

Repaired it about 45 minutes ago. On site tech was very friend, professional and was was very open with my questions. He had nothing but praise about the XPS series.

Anyways, all is well. All I have to say is if it happens again, I'm getting an M17x. :)

And now my screen is flickering!

I'm giving dell one more chance at correcting this problem or they can send me a new computer. This is getting annoying.

Holy cow! Couldn't believe it but the tech called me today to replace the lcd. He replaced it and it seemed to work fine but now my rig is crashing after startup. The screen inverts and fades to white. Make sure you check it out real good before they leave. Dell is sending me out a new laptop I've only had mine for 26 days. I love the laptop so ill give Dell one more try but damn, I don't even think the tech used any anti-static gear when replacing parts. Watch out.

Yea I played with mine for a good 15 minutes before the tech left and I wasn't having an issue. Even played BFBC2 for about 2 hours with no problems.

Next screen better work or they can refund my money and keep their XPS or cut me a deal on a M17x.

I think we should call up dell together and customer gangbang them. Maybe we could both get m17x's out of this :)

I already hope my next screen is bad. I found a M17 r3 in the outlet I'm drooling over.

Wow, bad luck Chase. Sorry to hear that. Seems Dell has had a run of bad screens of late, not sure what their deal is...

Just for kicks, are you running under GPU overclock or stock? That could be doing something, perhaps the GPU went?

GPU is only OC'd when I'm running a game. I'm pretty sure it's the screen because it's isolated to just the XPS' screen and not my 24" monitor.

If the next one is defective or if I'm still having problems, I'm pushing for a new or different computer. I'm not going to keep this one if I'm going to have non stop display issues.

Whats funny to me is that today, the screen isn't flickering.

Mystique. I would see what happens in next few days. If you will get any screen flickering again, give them a call and ask for a new system.

Well now I have a row of bright pixels. And on top of that, I've noticed the flickering is only present when the computer is running on battery. If I plug it in, it's fine. So obviously this screen is also defective.

    And....

    Bad motherboard anyone?

This has to be a failing motherboard.

Now it won't recognize any external speakers what so ever.

If it wasn't for having plans with my girlfriend tonight, I'd be on the phone with Dell.

Calling tomorrow and telling them what is going on and demanding another laptop or they can credit me 100% of the purchase price to my dell financial account.

Yea sounds like a mobo problem. Unfortunate. Most people have great times with these systems, but that is no consolation when you have problems. My initial system had a bad HDMI port. It would either output no signal or output a crazy distorted wavy mostly-green picture depending on the screen. Driver updates, clean install, nothing fixed it. The new system was perfect there, both before and after clean install. Hoping Dell replaced it before putting it in the outlet...

Good luck with Dell...they gave me countless crap trying to get a replacement, granted I didn't go through 3 screens. You've got some bargaining room.

Did they send you a refurbished system as a replacement? There is no way in hell that is acceptable to me for a 1 month old, $1600 computer. I keep getting told if I get a replacement that it wont be new. That already infuriates me since

    A) This computer is still being produced

    B) It's one month old

    C) None of this is my fault, and I purchased a new computer from the get-go.

If they think they are going to send me a refurb 3 weeks after delivery of my first system, they are Bat droppings crazy and can keep this laptop and refund me the original amount of my purchase with no B.S fees.

Ohh man, I'm already heated just thinking about having to deal with this.

Though your frustrations are reasonable, Dell by no means "has" to replace your unit. Lemon laws apply 3 times for the same exact problem, and on the 4th time it gets replaced. The law does not state whether it has to be new or refurbished. In fact ALOT of service parts ARE refurbished. I'd say 60-70% of drives we order under manufacturer warranty are refurbished.

I'm not saying that you aren't deserving of a "new" unit but it could be far worse.

Well I returned and re-ordered so I could get the FHD screen (which they said wasn't going to exist EVER when I ordered the initial system) and I added the backlit keyboard for the heck of it. So I got a new, but your situation is a bit different.

Dell likely won't do a replacement yet though honestly it would be cheaper for them to do so instead of sending techs out to you over and over with new parts. Versus a $15 shipping charge to send it back to them.

How soon did you return your system and did you have to pay a restock fee?

I requested the return after a week of fighting them over numerous issues and ultimately a very nasty email full of BBB threats, friends/coworkers to be steered away and so on. They were basically telling me, well, sorry we LIED to you on 2 things (screen and RAM slots), you are past 21 days, too bad, we can't do anything.

Now, I had HAD the system maybe 20 days when I started the calls. I was already outside the window by a WEEK because of Dell's shady policy of starting that window before they even ship (in my case 1 week before I got it, shipping was overnight) I wasn't too thrilled with them obviously.

After my message I got a phone call next business morning and they immediately said they would authorize a return, and without a restock fee (which I would have raised a stink about but when I asked I was told there would not be one).

Now I kept the system for another week despite getting the label the next day after the phone call. Call was on a Monday, I reordered on that Wednesday. Was out of town the Monday and Tuesday (same Monday as the call). Was out of town Friday - Monday as well, I asked them on Wed when I reordered if I could wait to return until I returned home (neglecting to mention I could have shipped it that day since I was back for those 2 days). They were fine with it, the UPS label was good for 10 days or something. I put it in the UPS system the Monday following the initial return authorization call.

Less than 2 weeks after the initial call allowing the authorization I had my money back, all but 1 cent of it. I didn't bother with getting on their case about it, wasn't worth the 2 hours of calls it would have taken...not even 1 minute would really have been worth that, lol.

I didn't have the [email protected] email at the time. My Ultimatum was sent through their "Unresolved Issues" form that I managed to get out of them during the week of calls. The only pseudo-attempt to help me I got that week. Dell has possibly lost future sales from me after all I went through, though I did reorder and like the system, so who knows in 3-5 years.

Good luck, they will ultimately settle with you if you keep at it.
