Specs in signature, my computer is running left 4 dead on medium-low settings with 10-20 fps all the time. This is abnormally low performance for an m1530 right? I'll try dling drivers, 3dmark, temps, etc when I get home, but does this mean that my gpu is probably faulty and I'll need a replacement?

eeep. an 8600m gt =( . thats one of the cards in the nvidia gpu meldown fiasco. Thats exactly how mine started to perform ...then a few days later all my colors melted down.. and i got weird artifacts on screen....happened 3 times on my sony vaio in a year...however in the Dell forum you'll find a couple of threads concerning this problem.

Hopefully yours is not about to die :( . good luck.

Well, if you're not getting any BSoDs or artifacts yet, it's hard to tell. Given that it's an M1530 with an 8600M GT, I'd say a GPU failure is likely, but there's still a chance that it might be a driver issue, etc.

try to download hw monitor and check out your temps. also you cannot judge the gpu by playing a single game. try other ones and monitor your temps closely. also download latest drivers to give you a performance boost. if you see it going above 90c, then this is surely a gpu overheating case.

maybe contact dell and try to get the mobo replaced if yours is under warranty? I had exact same issue with L4D and TF2 where frame drops even with high performance setting.
FYI, i did clean vent and reapplied thermal paste to both cpu and gpu.
    Once dell replaced the mobo,
I could play L4D in medium high setting and maintain 29~30fps with it and
    TF2 in 40~60fps
