My next laptop purchase is coming soon and I think I have my sights set on the 1640, with the core i7, 4670, etc etc...

Would appreciate some comments/thoughts from current owners...

    1) Will it play CODMW2?

    2) REAL WORLD heat issues, is it REALLY that hot?? Actual owners please chime in.

    3) Do you find the 1920 resolution too small? I will be reading/writing quite a bit, but I want that gorgeous RGB led. My eyes are bad, I wear glasses with a -9 prescription so maybe I ought to get the lower resolution...but then again when I have my glasses on I can see almost 20/20.

    4) Is Core i7 really that much faster than the P8700? Cost difference is about $200. Typical answer would probably be "CPU intensive tasks will see a boost, but everyday tasks you won't notice a difference" -- but if there is a genuine feeling of being faster, I will get it.

    5) Durability, is it built well? Latitude quality perhaps?

Well if you are looking at the i7 core, you are searching for Studio XPS 1645. It can run CODMW2, how well I don't know the details, and the overheating issue seems to be gone on 1645 (it gets warm though).

Thats very good to hear! Although coming from a Macbook pro, I'm sure I can handle the heat.

About the overheating part, I might be exagerating. Some dell reps say the throttle SXPS 1645 experience is due to heat. While others claim that different adapter fix the problem or at least reduces the effects.

You could get better results at the SXPS 1645 owner's lounge and the Throttle Investigation thread.

Watch my reviews of both the 1640 and 1645 for reviews of MW2 and heat.

1920x1080 is not too small, it's a great screen. If you DO find it too small then you can up the DPI to 125% and it's terrific still, I had it like that for awhile and didn't know it!

Keep in mind the Zalman laptop cooler is a relatively cheap option if heat does in-fact become a problem for you.

You evidently have not had a Prescott DESKTOP P4 sitting in a laptop then.

My older HP ZD8000 had a Prescott P4 in it. The entire bottom of the housing warped sooo very badly. The keys on the keyboard ended up going soft and warped, the keypad after a years worth of use melted, and my wrists got smooth and shiny as the palm rest would literally burn you if you kept typing for any period of time.

So yes the SXPS 16 has ZERO heat issues. Sure it gets warm, but NOT HOT!
