Is running 1280x800 on 1680x1050 the same as running 1280x800 on 1280x800?

does running windows on 1280x800 on a 1680x1050 screen have the same effect as running 1280x800 on a 1280x800 screen?

i have a 1680x1050 M1530 and my friend is going to buy a M1530 as well but he doesnt know what resolution he wants, i tried turning my laptop into both 1280x800 and 1440x900 in the display panel and the end result isnt very good, everything is kind of fuzzy.

does my little experiment accurately represent what a 1280x800/1440x900 will looks like?

Due to the scalling involved, fixed pixel displays, as opposed to CRTs, will always look their best when run at their native resolution. Anything else will result in what you describe as "fuzzy".

So, to answer your question, No, it will not look the same at all. Although the "real-estate" will be the same, running 1280x800 on a 1280x800 LCD display will result in a much sharper picture.

Your experiment is good enough to show the size, but not the quality. For a while I was running 1440 x 900 on a 1680 x 1050 panel. You get used to the fuzziness but it is nowhere as good as 1440 x 900 on a 1440 x 900 panel. That is the resolution I would recommend for anyone who finds 1680 x 1050 a little small. 1280 x 800 is much less real estate.

In theory it is possible to tweak the Windows display settings to give bigger fonts. However, this does not give thicker lines which are a factor in the legibility. Also there can be formatting problems.

If anyone has some picture comparisons of this, it would be appreciated.
