Dell is definitely trying to push this 6gb upgrade heavily as an upsell.
Will it actually make a positive difference? Or is the 4gb on XPS15 fine for i7/435m ?

I have 6GB just in case but i have never even ever used up 4GB. 4GB would be perfect unless you are doing heavy HD video editing. Gaming wise you do not need it.

4GB is more than sufficient for our usual needs
Gaming wise also there is no diff in the frame rate
Only people looking to encode FULL HD videos and all take advantage of it
But i say take 4GB and save some cash for some useful upgrade later -
A bit of a generalization don't you think? There are plenty of other activities that can be performed on a computer that require more memory. I for example have 8Gb (4 more than my last laptop). I am a software developer/architect and so run numerous application servers, databases and guest operating systems. 8Gb and 4 cores means that I don't have to compromise.

I have 6GB RAM and I see that Win7 tries to use it as much as possible, having swap file just near 300MB or so. I could just imagine how fast it'd work after modding it for SSD!

I saw an improvement on my SXPS 1640 upgrading from 6GB to 8GB of RAM. I run multiple Autodesk programs as well as Photoshop, most of the time all open at the same time as I work between the programs. The more RAM, the more capable the system is. For everyday computing then 4GB of RAM is fine.

Idk if 6GB runs faster then 8. But I know I have 4GB and I run linux VMwere and game at the same time and nothing ever crashs and everything is smooth.

obviously if you are asking this question then you are fine with 4gb.
Reason being is if you were heavily using photoshop or creating videos you would know if you were strapped for memory. -
The main function is to support the RAM to run many applications simultaneously. It is a question that you evaluate whether you'll actually need the benefit.
Is the 6gb RAM really necessary?
