I have just ordered a Studio 16 XPS from the Dell Outlet in the UK, and after coming across this forum am getting a touch worried that it might be a bad buy.

The set up I am getting is the following:

i5-520m 2.4ghz; 6gb ram; 500gb 7200rpm hd; full hd wled screen; blu ray

It has cost me £580 delivered. Is this a good price?

My work generally involves data analysis, and in all honesty a netbook is sufficient for that, so I have no real concerns on that score.

This will be replacing a desktop though, and I am worried about video editing. I have about 25 mini dv camcorder videos to upload and edit. Is the studio 1647 with i5 processor up to it? Is this the sort of thing that might be affected by the throttling issue that I have seen mentioned?

Also, can anyone recommend good software for video editing on this? Years ago I used Windows movie maker and was surprisingly impressed by it.

    Cheers for any opinions.

My old desktop was well past it. That's one of the reasons I have about 25 mini dv videos that have built up over the last 5 years.

basically if its faster than your desktop, you will be happy. if you are going form something like a i7-920 to this , you will feel it lags but ifyour old computer was slower this will be a lot faster.

I like your logic. You are basically saying that relative to what I am used to, this will feel fast, which is fair enough. :)

But has anyone had any experience of using a xps 1647 with i5 for video editing? Is this the sort of thing that might be affected by the throttling issue? Would it also be OK if I upgrade to an HD camcorder in the future, or will it start to struggle?

I have a 1647 with an i5 540m (2.56ghx OB to 3.06). A 3 minute 720p highest quality possible video takes about 10 minutes to encode on adobe encore cs5. During transitions (blending) and effects there is a small bit of lag in the preview window when editing. Its nothing major and the final product comes out in sync. This is a video I did about a week ago on my 1647 with Pr CS5: YouTube - PS3 - It only does EPIC

How do you have a 1645 with an i5?? The major difference between the 1645 and 1647 is that the 1647's have dual core i5/7s, and the 1645 only has quad core i7s. The chipset is slightly different, with the 1645s having the HM55, and the 1647s having the PM55, but that's a minor detail. Did you swap processors in an upgrade or something? Just curious.

I was wondering the same thing, but I think the 1645 and 1647 are both using the PM55 chipset...unless it has changed recently. I know this has been discussed before. http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...o-xps-1647-pm55-hm55-switchable-graphics.html

Yeah, I think you're right. I just checked in CPU-Z, and it says that I have the PM55. I could have sworn I read something different on a Dell spec sheet somewhere, but it looks like the forum you linked to clears that up. Besides, I got the PM and HM switched up in my head... Still, i5 = 1647, lol.
