    Hey everyone,

I'm deciding between Dell XPS m1330 and the Sony VAIO SR, and have been slightly leaning towards Dell! yay! However, I'm kinda worried about the GPU problem I've read about. So I was wondering if I buy the XPS m1330 in say June (I'm going USA for college then), will I have the NVidia graphics card which does not have a design flaw? And also, about the heating issue, has Dell done anything about that? Or will I have to do the copper mod thing if I buy this laptop?

    Thanks in advance!

As far as I know no currently sold cards have the GPU problem.

As for the heating, it's a small chassis with a lot of power under the hood. There are no miracles, it WILL heat up.

Thank you for the reply! So then without the copper mod will there me any severe heating issues? Or will it just be super hot?

Get 3 years warranty and don't worry about it. I have no coppermod and my idle GPU temp is 55°C, stressed 85°C. No worries...

Get the 3 year warranty and HOPE that it gets really hot and blows up! 2 new laptops within 3 years for the price of one :)

Lol. Nice. You make a laptop blowing sound very profitable. But 3 year warranty costs a lot of money! Is it really worth it??

Good plan, except that some people actually use their laptops on a daily basis and it breaking down is a huge inconvinience.

I didn't sign up to the philosophy of the disposable computer when buying the M1330. After two motherboard replacements with the GPU going South while I was out of the country ( Try getting any international support on the phone ), I for one don't buy into all is well with any of these new Nvidia GPU's. It's a pretty sad state of affairs that every day when you press the power button you aren't optimistic about not seeing those vertical lines come up again.

When I move on from this M1330 to another notebook I'll be reminded of all the fun times with motherboard replacements, the Matash ita optical drive failing, USB issues where the battery has to get removed once every few weeks so that the USB ports recognize anything being plugged into them and screws holding in the hard drive that were stripped causing a hell of time upgrading to a new one.

I like the size of the M1330, the LED screen, and the performance, but I can't say I'll shed a tear once I move on and based on this experience it won't be back to a Dell.

I am having hell a lot of bad experience with DELL XPS M1330. Within one year motherboard, heatsink, optical drive, fan, keyboard are changed. But i am facing overheat problem, graphics hang, unworking media center and recently after their take to workshop diagnosis, SHOCK in keypad & in side panels when plugging to adapter. So the system is of no use at all now.

I am asking them to replace a new laptop and they are not agreeing it. they say that they would replace motherboard once again, new graphics card and check.

they are suggesting to break a screw in the back panel and telling me that they will replace whatever parts that might get damaged due to breaking.. and my warranty period is almost over and there is no assurance that the problem wont come again. I simply rejected service and fighting to get a new laptop in replacement.

    Problems faced:

    No bootup
    Overheat
    Optical drive failure
Keyboard Damage (during diagnastics at their workplace - taken 10 days for diagnosis and returned with new problems)
    Shock
    Now... NO DISPLAY IN MONITOR

DON'T BUY XPS 1330 - This is my advise.

AFAIK, the GPU heating issue hasn't be resolved. Dell issued a bios update (A12) which improves thermal control (i.e. the fan spin up earlier) The fan is always running as a result and therefore its life will decrease over time.

I have purchased 3 year complete care. I had the mobo and GPU replaced and I hope it doesn't die on me again.

So my suggestion is, if you don't mind having to replace your m1330, (possibly 2,3, 6 months later) then get it. Otherwise, get something else.
You know how life is, your pc breaks down whenever you most need it! and you'd be very pissed like I was.

Well from all these replies I guess I'll go with the sony SR then. Sounds like a more stable choice. Thanks for the replies everyone.
