Im thinking about picking up this bad boy but I dont want to get caught like I did with my Inspiron 1520 when I bought it 3 years ago (I bought it and then 3 days later they bought out the 1525 which was 20% lighter etc).

Also i've heard lots of things regarding XPS machines running very hot, is it very bad? Or is it one of those things that are just blown out of proportion?

    Thanks :)

Oh and feel free to tell me about your experiences with the 1647...if you want

well the 1520 is a better machine - better screen resolutions, better graphics and better processors.

And no refresh due- perhaps in the fall when the smaller 13-14 inch comes out- also rumors about no more XPS' coming and the gaming line will be moved to the Alienware line... I sure hope that does not happen

The 1647 just came out, and it already has the 2010 core i processors. It wont be getting refreshed this year most likely.

I would expect the GPU to be changed from a 4670 to the 5xxx series within a couple of weeks at most.

The motherboard/GPU refresh would be around Q2. If they were going to do it Q1 it would've been earlier. Thats just what Im guessing tho.

It was the GPU that I was most hoping for/worrying about, so do you think it'd be worth holding off for 2 or 3 weeks? I think i'd feel pretty bad if i bought one with the 4670 and then they went and put in a 5xxx for a similar cost

the 5730 is out for the i5 variants in other countries so im sure this will get the new 5xxx gpu real soon. But i dont think it will perform much more better since the ram is gddr3 not gddr5 which ive read can decrease performance from 10-15%.

I'm in the same boat you are, demonhotrod, and I've decided to wait it out until May, hoping that the GPU gets updated. As some replacement machines are already including the updated card, I'm crossing my fingers that it will be soon. Not a hardcore gamer or anything, but the new card would draw less power, and maybe not have any of the throttling/overheating issues (as well as maybe switchable graphics capabilities? Anyone have any thoughts on that?).

Ouch man, thats hard. What was the original fault?
It'd be totally sweet if you manage to get a 5730 though, thats a bit of an improvement over the 4670. I wonder if that means they are planning on putting it into the XPS though, I mean it's not like they'd just have some spare 5730's lying about, that just so happen to fit into the chassis...maybe? Or just wishful thinking?

I am holding out until at least May like ronson5 as well. There has to be something coming out from Dell to either replace the Studio XPS 13 or maybe add a 14" to the XPS series very soon. Who really wants a 15.4-16" XPS with a starting weight of 6.3 lbs or a gaudy 11" Alienware!!! With the recent CPU updates, I wouldn't expect an updated SXPS 16 for a while. Right now I'm waiting to see the specs on the M2500 Precision Mobile Workstation that should be released very soon. (Just a guess though. :) )

i had a xps 1530 what was having all kinds of issues. then they give me a sxps 1640 with a ati 3760 gpu and i got an upgrade to the 4670 gpu but they sent the wrong heatsink. ( dell tech came out 4 times with the wrong heatsink!!) i even had them send me a heatsink so i can replace it myself but they still sent me the wrong one. so they offer me a system-system replacement. i was allowed to specify what i wanted in my system replacement. and it got approved 1 week later now i gotta wait 2-3 weeks for the system to come. heh. kinda sucks with all this down time. the dang semester is almost over!!!! so much for programming on my own laptop this semester. i think i got the run around.... maybe it will be all worth it in the end....

04/05/2010 07:22:03PM Agent (Bhaskara_52073): "Chris you may be sent with the new replacement computer and it may be the same 1645 computer since that computer is still under production and there has been some changes with respect to the bottom chassis , that are redesigned to overcome heating issue, and there may be the same hardware configuration ."

    Sounds fishy.......

The 1640 will not be in production much longer- i would guess as soon as the parts are gone- no point in offering both c2d and iC

So the XPS 16 is going to be dropped? All gaming machines are going to Alienware and so what will Dell be selling, Studios, Vostros and Inspirons?

    Hmmmmm

The overheating is an issue with the corei7 models, not the i5 if what people in these forums told me is right.

ok so the other thread i just read shows that the dell drivers page for the 1645 and 1647 has a driver for the 5730 GPU. It's coming yes ... but when can we have it? I keep hearing these comments about replacement systems having a 5730 ...

DOES ANYONE ACTUALLY HAVE A CONFIRMED 5730 IN THEIR MACHINE?

Sorry to "shout" ... so much speculation ... no real answers ... yet
    It's driving me insane.

    Hmmm, very interesting
If there are signs of a 5730 coming then i will definitely wait!
It would be good for Dell to give some proper answers

So I've just browsed the Dell site, just to check for any updates. I was struck by the ridiculousness of this: The Inspiron 15, Studio 15, Studio 17 all have 5xxx series GPUs ... but not the "flagship" Studio XPS ... what the ??? Come on Dell, please!

Maybe all the throttling issues have distracted them and delayed further development with the sxps 16

Perhaps, but if they are indeed planning on phasing out the XPS range (not my words) then it would make sense for them to not update it

Someone earlier stated the xps1640 (core2duo) was being phased out. Not the entire line of studio xps16's

Ah my bad, i mis-read it. I thought they meant discontinuing the entire XPS16 range and moving it over to Alienware, not just stopping a particular model
